Job Summary

The Zhu lab at the University of Virginia seeks a highly skilled and motivated Research Technician to join our team. As a Research Technician, you will play a critical role in conducting cutting-edge research in the field of neuroscience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform complex technical support for research projects, including data analysis, experiment design, and equipment maintenance.
  • Conduct experiments involving animal care, handling, and observation, as well as maintain equipment and apparatuses.
  • Coordinate and participate in routine technical duties, providing assistance to clinical and research staff in testing, determinations, and experiments.
  • Assist in evaluating research methods, procedures, and techniques, based on established objectives.
  • Provide basic assistance to researchers in manipulating, computing, and analyzing data using specialized statistical computer software.
  • May perform certain surgical procedures on small lab animals.
  • Assist with training other staff members on procedures; may supervise students or volunteers.
  • Assist Principal Investigators and senior staff in developing new strategies and techniques for experimentation.
  • Provide routine, technical, and administrative support to research projects.
  • May contact and coordinate schedules with study subjects, handle information intake, and record and track results.
Requirements
  • Associate's degree in a related science field.
  • At least 2 years of lab experience, which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree in a related science field may be considered in lieu of experience.
  • Prior experience in molecular biology, electrophysiology, imaging, and MATLAB-based programming and data analysis is preferred.
Working Conditions

This position requires extensive periods of standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Keyboarding and other bench work, as well as animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation, are also required.
