The Nurse Manager is tasked with the planning, organization, coordination, and evaluation of management and clinical practice activities for the nursing unit(s) under their supervision. They hold 24-hour accountability by establishing measurable goals and objectives to ensure the delivery of optimal quality patient care while fostering staff development in a professional and compassionate manner.
Key Contributions to the Team
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
o Accountable for overseeing all personnel within nursing unit(s).
o Conducts interviews and selects the most qualified candidates to fill vacancies. This includes new hires or internal transfers.
o Adheres to all hiring protocols and collaborates with Human Resources and education departments to facilitate hiring and orientation.
o Maintains high levels of employee engagement and performance through recognition and learning opportunities.
o Conducts annual performance evaluations for all unit staff.
o Ensures staff have a clear understanding of expectations.
o Identifies areas for improvement throughout the year.
o Provides coaching, counseling, and disciplinary actions to employees when necessary in a professional and timely manner.
o Identifies issues, investigates incidents, and ensures compliance with Policies & Procedures.
o Works with the Director to determine appropriate disciplinary actions and improvement plans.
o Maintains detailed notes on staff performance.
o Encourages professional development among staff.
o Recognizes strengths and areas for growth.
o Utilizes strengths to enhance self-esteem and professional growth.
o Identifies educational needs of staff and collaborates with the education department for program development.
o Creates a conducive learning environment for staff and nursing students.
o Demonstrates innovative and safe staffing management.
o Develops unit schedules within budget constraints while ensuring safe and effective care levels, distributing schedules at least 10 days prior to the start date.
o Identifies and implements creative staffing solutions to meet unit needs within productivity limits.
o Collaborates with peers and staffing coordinators regarding personnel distribution across nursing departments.
o Conducts rounds to assess nursing skill mix and assignments in relation to patient acuity and care requirements.
o Maintains productivity levels.
o Communicates the concept of nursing hours per patient day and approved targets.
o Justifies variances in HPPD based on unit-specific variables.
o Maximizes productivity and quality of patient care within established target hours.
o If applicable, utilizes acuity systems to ensure appropriate nursing care hours.
o Fosters teamwork among staff.
o Supports collaboration and cooperation with other units and departments to ensure quality patient care.
o Ensures Quality Patient Care is consistently delivered on units.
o Maintains knowledge of the scope of practice for all staff as defined by the State Board of Nursing and hospital Policies & Procedures.
o Ensures patient care assignments are made according to competency and acuity.
o Complies with all regulatory agency requirements.
o Ensures staff procedures are within the scope of practice as applicable to the ages of patients served on the unit.
o Conducts routine patient rounds to assess, problem-solve, and provide customer service.
o Ensures adherence to policies and procedures regarding patient care delivery is complete.
o Guarantees complete documentation of assessment, intervention, and evaluation of patient care.
o Monitors staff competency in caring for patients on the unit.
o Regularly oversees nursing care during off shifts.
o Prepares, analyzes, reviews, and monitors operational and capital budgets for assigned unit(s).
o Collaborates with the director to develop the budget.
o Continuously monitors the budget and completes monthly variance analyses within established timeframes.
o Verifies the accuracy of monthly budget reports.
o Adjusts spending to remain within budgetary allowances.
o Ensures resource cost containment.
o Coordinates and promotes the Performance Improvement plan within the unit.
o Documents issues, action plans, and evaluations.
o Encourages staff understanding, support, and participation in Performance Improvement activities.
o Participates in hospital-wide Performance Improvement projects and completes assignments within established timeframes.
o Promotes Balanced Scorecard objectives.
o Shares information with staff.
o Strives to achieve all goals within estimated timeframes.
o Posts monthly updates for staff.
o Discusses in staff meetings.
o Complies with and supports Balanced Scorecard established by the Director and Administration.
o Enhances customer satisfaction within the unit.
o Assesses needs for improvement and develops action plans.
o Addresses patient complaints promptly.
o Collaborates with Patient Relations Coordinator as necessary.
o Evaluates progress and adjusts plans as needed.
o Communicates effectively with staff.
o Holds monthly staff meetings for all shifts of unit staff.
o Communicates relevant information about the unit, nursing department, and hospital.
o Establishes various communication routes to ensure effective information dissemination among staff.
o Communicates essential patient information to the Director of Nursing and Risk Management that may significantly impact the nursing department and hospital.
o Embodies the Philosophy of Nursing and Administration.
o Meets daily with staff, patients, and physicians to identify problems, resolve issues, and provide support.
o Presents professionally, demonstrating SHARE behaviors and a positive attitude at all times.
o Fosters effective working relationships with other nursing and ancillary departments.
o Actively participates in assigned committees.
o Engages in recruitment and retention initiatives.
o Collaborates with other nurse managers to ensure coverage.
o Participates in ongoing educational activities related to specialty areas as well as management seminars.
QualificationsEDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
REQUIRED:
A minimum of three (3) years of nursing experience. At least one (1) year of supervisory experience with demonstrated leadership and management capabilities preferred. Must obtain a bachelor's degree in nursing, business, or a healthcare-related field within three (3) years of hire.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:
Bachelor's degree in nursing, business, or a healthcare-related field.
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION
REQUIRED:
Current Florida RN license. Current BLS certification.
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION PREFERRED:
Advanced preparation or certification in a clinical specialty.
