Job Summary

The Registered Nurse Cardiology Specialist is a professional practitioner who delivers patient care through the nursing process at Touchette Regional Hospital.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with patients, families, and healthcare teams to promote positive patient outcomes.
  • Assess and reassess patient clinical conditions, including objective and subjective assessment data during cardiac stress studies.
  • Utilize critical thinking skills for patient care and daily operations.
  • Demonstrate clinical competencies and skills applicable to the unit.
  • Coordinate, initiate, and validate teaching based on identified learning needs of patients and designated support persons.
  • Manage, administer, and reconcile medications. Assess and re-assess patients.
  • Document patient care, interventions, and responses in the electronic health record (EHR) in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Coordinate event monitors and pacemaker checks with vendors.
  • Delegate tasks appropriately according to skill level.
  • Facilitate patient flow and tasks to support cardiologists.
  • Prioritize and delegate tasks related to patient care.
  • Knowledge of role in code blue situations.
  • Provide clear and sensitive communication and education with patients and families dealing with various stages of cardiac care.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required.
  • Greater than one (1) year of working experience in a similar unit with comparable patient acuity is preferred.
  • BLS certified required.
  • EKG basics.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification within 1 year of hire.
  • Current Illinois RN State licensure required.
  • Ability to start IVs.
Physical Demands
  • Sit or stand for a prolonged period of time.
  • Regularly exposed to body fluids with the risk of bloodborne pathogens or airborne pathogens.
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) (mask, gown, gloves) when required.
  • Lifting/transferring:
    • Able to lift 25 pounds from floor to waist using proper body mechanics.
    • Able to transfer or position clients greater than 50 pounds with assistance or assistive devices.
  • Pushing/pulling:
    • Required in positioning and moving clients and medical equipment. Pushing required performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
  • Stooping/kneeling/reaching:
    • Considerable twisting, bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching during many aspects of clients' care (bathing, making beds, setting up and monitoring medical equipment).
  • Motor coordination and manual dexterity:
    • Able to use one or both hands for grasping, pushing/pulling, and fine manipulation to perform procedures.
  • Tactile sensation:
    • Able to feel vibrations, temperature changes, and pulses.
  • Eyesight/vision:
    • Near acuity: clarity of vision at 20 inches or less; with 20/40 vision or better with or without correction.
    • Far acuity: clarity of vision at 20 feet or more; with 20/40 vision or better with or without correction.
    • Able to accurately read labels and prepare medications. Read written communication and monitor medical equipment findings.
  • Temperament:
    • Ability to adapt to a continually changing environment.
    • Able to accept constructive criticism and accept own limits.
    • Emotional and mental stability needed to maintain a therapeutic relationship with clients, families, and health team members.
  • Hearing:
    • Must be able to hear a forced whisper at 5 ft.
