Position Overview

At COMHAR, our commitment is to deliver health and human services that empower individuals, families, and communities to achieve healthier, self-directed lives. We are seeking a Certified Peer Specialist for our HOPE program.

The HOPE (Helping Opportunities for People's Empowerment) initiative is a community-oriented psychiatric rehabilitation program that forms part of COMHAR's CIRC (Community Integrated Recovery Center) model, designed for adults and seniors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a role model for individuals in recovery, fostering hope and sharing personal experiences and insights gained through recovery.
  • Engage with at-risk individuals, providing recovery education and support tailored to their stage of recovery, including the use of evidence-based practices.
  • Facilitate the orientation process for new clients entering mental health and/or co-occurring disorders services.
  • Assist in the creation and execution of educational and support groups, as well as activities beneficial to the program community, such as warm lines and event calendars.
  • Connect individuals with community resources and peer support systems outside the facility to encourage community integration, including training in public transportation, computer education/G.E.D. classes, vocational services, health and wellness programs, and financial entitlements.
  • Actively engage in team meetings, ensuring that a recovery-oriented perspective is a central theme in all discussions.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED + Certified Peer Specialist Certification (CPS)
  • Proficiency in both Spanish and English
  • Experience working with individuals facing co-occurring challenges, including mental health and substance use issues
  • Minimum of 1 year of direct service experience in mental health
  • Experience can include paid or volunteer work in mental health direct care; forensic training is advantageous.
