Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Sports Tournament Staff to join our team at Howard County. As a key member of our Recreation & Parks department, you will be responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of our sports tournaments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare the game site for each tournament, ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for participants.
  • Participate in pre-game meetings with officials, tournament partners, and site supervisors to discuss game details and ensure a smooth start.
  • Start and end games on schedule, while maintaining accurate timekeeping and scorekeeping records.
  • Direct games in accordance with established tournament rules, ensuring a fair and enjoyable experience for all participants.
  • Maintain a positive and friendly relationship with players, coaches, officials, and other stakeholders.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants, reporting any incidents or accidents to the tournaments and events coordinator.
  • Return the game site to its original condition after each tournament.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the tournaments and events coordinator and site supervisor.
Requirements
  • Knowledge of current sports rules and the ability to interpret them.
  • At least 16 years of age.
  • Ability to understand and interpret specific league tournament rules and County procedures.
  • Ability to schedule and reschedule games due to inclement weather, team no-show, or official no-show.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with parents, spectators, players, staff, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to deal with difficult individuals and maintain a positive attitude.
  • Community CPR and First Aid certification desirable.
  • Coaching and/or sport-specific official certifications desirable.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Background in participation, teaching, coaching, scorekeeping, or officiating in the specific sport.
  • Prior experience working as a scorekeeper.
  • Two years of knowledge of the rules of the specific sport.
Compensation

Contingent - salary commensurate with experience. Minimum Wage to $18.00/hour (Paraprofessional).
