Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and enthusiastic Adaptive Swim Instructor to join our team at Howard County Recreation & Parks. As a key member of our aquatics team, you will be responsible for teaching adaptive swim lessons to participants of all ages, while ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all.

Key Responsibilities
  • Teach adaptive swim lessons to participants of all ages, following established curricula and adapting to individual needs as needed.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and orderly facility, inspecting regularly and reporting any unsafe conditions or equipment to supervisors or facilities managers.
  • Attend and participate in all mandatory staff meetings and training courses, staying up-to-date on the latest techniques and best practices in adaptive swim instruction.
  • Promote aquatic programs to the community, highlighting the benefits of adaptive swim lessons for individuals with disabilities.
  • Develop and maintain open communication with guests, participants, and their parents, ensuring a positive and supportive learning environment.
  • Set up and clean up the facility daily, maintaining a high level of organization and attention to detail.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor, adhering to uniform requirements and representing Howard County Recreation & Parks in a positive and respectful manner.
  • Work lifeguard shifts if certified, providing a safe and secure environment for all participants.
Qualifications
  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Pre-employment/employment testing of teaching skills, demonstrating lesson plans and instructional techniques.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations, making good decisions and prioritizing safety.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing, with the ability to work effectively with individuals of all ages and abilities.
  • Ability to work as an individual and within the framework of a team, collaborating with colleagues to achieve shared goals and objectives.
  • Understand and abide by the department's customer service standards, providing exceptional service to all participants and guests.
  • Maintain personal physical endurance and agility necessary to perform job functions, including swimming and lifeguarding.
  • Evening availability and reliable transportation, with the ability to work a varied schedule as needed.
  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification and Lifeguarding/First Aid and CPR/AED for the Lifeguard certification preferred.
Experience
  • Swimming experience preferred, with a strong background in teaching and instruction.
Rate of Pay

Salary commensurate with experience and employment commitment, with a range of $18.00-$23.00 per hour for contingent positions.

Selected candidates may be subject to drug screening, background screening, and reference checks. Applicants who have education obtained outside of the U.S. may need to provide proof of the equivalent U.S. education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service.
