Job Title: Therapeutic Recreation Adaptive Swim Instructor

Howard County Government is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Therapeutic Recreation Adaptive Swim Instructor to join our team.

Job Summary:

The Therapeutic Recreation Adaptive Swim Instructor will be responsible for teaching adaptive swim lessons to individuals with disabilities, promoting aquatic programs to the community, and maintaining a safe and clean facility.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Teach adaptive swim lessons to individuals with disabilities, adapting to the needs of each participant.
  2. Promote aquatic programs to the community, including outreach and marketing efforts.
  3. Maintain a safe and clean facility, inspecting the area regularly and reporting any unsafe conditions to supervisors.
  4. Attend and participate in all mandatory staff meetings and training courses.
  5. Hold productive and engaging lessons for participants of all ages, following provided curricula and adapting as needed.
  6. Maintain open communication with guests, participants, and/or participants' parents.
  7. Set up and clean up the facility daily.
  8. Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor, including adhering to uniform requirements.
  9. Work lifeguard shifts if certified.
  10. Complete additional duties assigned by supervisors.

Qualifications:

  1. Must be at least 16 years of age.
  2. Pre-employment/employment testing of teaching skills (demonstrate lesson).
  3. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations, with good decision-making skills.
  4. Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
  5. Ability to work as an individual and within the framework of a team.
  6. Understand and abide by the department's customer service standards.
  7. Maintain personal physical endurance and agility necessary to perform job functions.
  8. Evening availability.
  9. Reliable transportation.
  10. American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification preferred.
  11. Certification in American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid and CPR/AED for the Lifeguard preferred.

Rate of Pay:

Salary commensurate with experience and employment commitment. Contingent - $18.00-$23.00.
