Observation Assistant

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Observation Assistant to join our team at UMass Memorial Health. As an Observation Assistant, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of our patients in the Emergency Department.
Key Responsibilities- Provide constant observation of high-risk patients, monitoring their activity and behavior to prevent falls and other safety incidents.
- Assist patients with daily activities, such as getting undressed, using the bathroom, and eating meals.
- Escorts patients to and from the bathroom, under the direction of the RN, and assists with mealtime and comfort measures.
- Notifies the nurse of any changes in patient activity, mood, or behavior, and requests assistance when necessary.
- Reminds patients of the importance of their safety and fall prevention, and attempts to redirect their attention from equipment.
- Participates in de-escalation techniques to redirect patients and, if necessary, assists with restraints under the direction of the RN or MD.
- High School Graduate or equivalent.
- Ability to complete de-escalation training and certification in Basic Life Support or Heartsaver course.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to remain calm in emergency situations and assist with physical restraint of disturbed patients.
- Previous experience in patient care, mental health, or teaching/child care/special needs students.
This position requires work indoors in a patient care environment, with continuous visual inspection and auditory monitoring of patient movements and activities. The ability to stand, walk, run, reach, bend, lift, and stoop is required to respond to unsafe patient movements.
