Job Title: Veterinary Technician

Join the City of Jacksonville's Animal Care and Protective Services Division as a Veterinary Technician. This is a unique opportunity to work with a team dedicated to providing exceptional animal care and protection services to our community.

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Veterinary Technician to join our team. As a Veterinary Technician, you will be responsible for providing technical support to veterinarians and veterinary technicians in routine medical, surgical, and necropsy procedures. You will also be responsible for maintaining kennel facilities, caring for sheltered animals, and performing related clerical and customer support work.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Administer basic medical treatments under the direction of a veterinarian
  • Take vital signs of animals
  • Clean and disinfect different areas of the shelter to ensure the health and well-being of the animal population
  • Feed and care for critical animals in the medical areas
  • Retrieve, restrain, and assist with medical examinations of animals
  • Utilize and maintain laboratory equipment
  • Perform radiographs
  • Prepare, maintain, and retrieve records, reports, and detailed and accurate medical histories of animals housed at the facility using a personal computer
  • Maintain inventory of medications, medical equipment, medical supplies, food, cleaning, and care supplies
  • Perform euthanasia as taught by the FACA-approved class and in compliance with the ACPS euthanasia protocol
  • Provide customer assistance and information concerning animals and adoption policies
  • Collect redemption and adoption fees and maintain records of monies collected as required
  • Draw blood, prepare, and handle lab specimens and perform routine lab tests
Requirements:
  • Two years of education and/or technical experience in biology, animal husbandry, herd management, animal handling/care, veterinary technician, pre-med or pre-veterinary, medical, phlebotomy, or laboratory technician experience
  • Successfully passing the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) to become certified as a Veterinary Technician may be substituted for six months of experience
  • Euthanasia Technician Certification must be obtained prior to completion of probation
  • A valid driver's license is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment in this class
  • Must qualify for prior to appointment, obtain, and maintain during employment in this class a City of Jacksonville certification as a public driver
Working Conditions:

The work is performed in an animal shelter environment, where there are some risks and hazards due to the handling of vicious, ill, infectious, and rabid animals, and exposure to offensive odors, chemicals, and other airborne nuisances.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands consist mainly of standing, walking, transporting animals, and lifting animals and/or objects weighing more than 50 pounds.
