Job Description

**About the Opportunity**

The Orleans Indigent Defender is seeking highly motivated and detail-oriented law students to participate in our Law Clerk Externship program. As a law clerk, you will have the opportunity to work closely with our experienced attorneys in all aspects of criminal litigation, including legal research, factual investigation, and drafting memoranda and motions.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough legal research on a wide range of issues arising from the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 8th Amendments.
  • Assist attorneys in drafting memos, motions, and writ applications to the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals and the Louisiana Supreme Court.
  • Visit clients in jail, meet with clients' families and/or defense witnesses, and conduct investigations with attorneys.
  • Assist attorneys at trial and substantive motions hearings, and digest discovery and pretrial hearing transcripts.
  • Observe client counseling and plea negotiations.

Requirements

  • Law students currently enrolled in a J.D. program.
  • Strong research and writing skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
