Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Wireman Foreman, this role involves performing various tasks related to the construction, upkeep, and repair of substations and associated equipment.

SUPERVISORY ROLE

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Constructs and maintains structural components of substations, including steel frameworks, foundations, bus structures, and underground feeder terminals.
  2. Installs and services electrical apparatus essential for the operation of substations, such as switchboards, relays, circuit breakers, and protective devices.
  3. Conducts a variety of tests to ensure the maintenance and repair of substation operations and electrical transmission systems.
  4. Prepares and maintains comprehensive reports and records related to maintenance and repairs.
  5. Performs substation switching and related tasks as necessary.
  6. Installs and removes meters as required.
  7. Operates vehicles and powered equipment as needed, utilizing various tools and equipment in the electrical field.
  8. Works independently or collaboratively with others, providing training and guidance as needed.
  9. Undertakes additional duties as assigned.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • In-depth knowledge of substations, protective systems, and electrical transmission and distribution systems.
  • Familiarity with tools, materials, and practices used in the electrical trade.
  • Understanding of the construction and maintenance of various electrical equipment.
  • Knowledge of electrical theory and the ability to interpret technical diagrams and schematics.
  • Awareness of relevant laws, codes, and safety regulations.
  • Ability to recognize occupational hazards and implement safety measures.
  • Physical fitness to meet the demands of the role, including strength and stamina.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with a focus on interpersonal relations.
  • Capability to address customer inquiries and concerns with professionalism.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position requires working in both office and field settings, often under challenging weather conditions. The individual must be able to climb poles and perform rescues if necessary. During emergencies, extended hours may be required. The role involves lifting up to 85 pounds and may expose the individual to hazardous materials.

QUALIFICATIONS
A high school diploma (or G.E.D.) along with 4 years of experience as a Journeyman Lineman is essential. Completion of an approved Wireman Apprenticeship is required. A valid Washington State Class-A commercial driver's license, CPR certification, and first aid training are necessary. Availability for emergency call-outs is expected.
