Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Peer Specialist to join our team at Services For The Underserved, Inc. (S:US). The successful candidate will work with adult families in our shelter in Brooklyn, providing peer support and advocacy services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Outreach and Engagement: Establish strong relationships with participants and families, promoting community awareness of S:US services and encouraging help-seeking.
  • Relationship Building: Develop authentic and meaningful relationships with individuals and families through empathy, sharing experiences, and active listening.
  • Embracing Creative Narratives: Understand, share, and discuss multiple frameworks for understanding life experiences, such as psychosis, with participants and the S:US team.
  • Advocacy: Advocate with and for program participants in the larger community and on the team.
  • Co-Creating Support and Wellness Tools: Collaborate with participants to clarify their personal visions and develop their wellness toolkit.
  • Influencing Team Culture: Positively influence the team culture by advocating for clients, promoting a youth-friendly approach, and encouraging the use of recovery-oriented language.
  • Team Communication: Maintain open and frequent communication with the team, reporting safety and other concerns, and keeping notes on visits with program participants.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED or 2 years of experience working in a large residential/institutional setting with a special needs population.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Patience, creativity, flexibility, compassion, and sensitivity to persons with mental health and substance abuse issues and criminal court involvement.
  • NYS Driver's License preferred.
