THE POSITION

Under close supervision, you will acquire knowledge of general law enforcement and crime prevention protocols while attending a P.O.S.T. certified academy. This training prepares you to undertake a variety of professional law enforcement responsibilities in accordance with Transportation Security Agency Regulations.

Members of the City of Santa Barbara Airport Police are recognized as Peace Officers under California Penal Code.


Knowledge Required:

Basic oral and written communication skills essential for report writing, verbal explanations of legal matters, and court testimony.


Key Abilities:
  • Learn the standards of conduct and public relations expected of Peace Officers.
  • Understand the maintenance of firearms and police-related equipment.
  • Master the operation of motor vehicles, particularly at high speeds, utilizing defensive driving techniques.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals encountered during duties.
  • Maintain physical fitness suitable for the performance of assigned tasks, which may include:
    • Extended periods of walking, standing, or sitting.
    • Walking, running, and engaging in various physical activities.
    • Lifting objects or individuals weighing up to 50 pounds.
    • Operating assigned equipment.

Visual and Auditory Skills:

Ability to make observations, communicate effectively, read and write, and operate assigned equipment and vehicles.

Experience and Training Guidelines

A combination of experience and training that provides the necessary knowledge and abilities is acceptable. A typical pathway to gain the required qualifications may include:


Experience:

Minimum entry requirements may be satisfied through a combination of experience and/or education that has developed the necessary knowledge and abilities.


License or Certificate:

Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid driver's license at the time of appointment.


REQUIREMENTS:
Age:

Applicants must be at least 21 years old at the time of appointment.


Physical:

Weight must be proportionate to height, with normal hearing and color vision; excellent health is required. Candidates must meet the physical and psychological standards necessary for Police Officer duties.


Education:

High school graduation or equivalent is required.


Other Requirements:

No history of personal or criminal conduct that may impact suitability for employment as a Peace Officer.

Applicants must submit a completed City Application and responses to the Supplemental Questionnaire. It is crucial that your application and supplemental questionnaire reflect all relevant education, training, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities that qualify you for this position.

Applications and supplemental questionnaires will be reviewed, and the most qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the examination process. Incomplete applications may be rejected.

The selection process may include: application/questionnaire rating, practice/written exercise, written exam, oral board exam, physical agility exam, departmental interview, background investigation, polygraph, psychological evaluation, medical exam, and controlled substances screening.
