Position Overview

Grata is on the lookout for an experienced Senior Backend Engineer who excels in backend development. The ideal candidate is a dedicated engineer with a history of delivering high-efficiency technology solutions. Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop high-caliber code that adheres to our internal standards for style, maintainability, and best practices for scalable software systems. Promote and uphold these standards during code evaluations.
  • Lead initiatives to enhance product quality, security, and performance that benefit not only your team but also other departments within the organization.
  • Refine the performance of our distributed systems, which includes AWS services, databases, and our search platform. Your objective will be to meet ambitious performance benchmarks across all layers of our architecture, from the user-facing API to the foundational components.
  • Work alongside Machine Learning Engineers to create innovative AI-driven features.
  • Design and implement scalable data infrastructure within a distributed, event-driven framework.
  • Experiment with and prototype new technologies and tools as part of our continuous innovation efforts.

Candidate Profile:

  • At least 8 years of experience in software engineering.
  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science/Engineering or equivalent professional experience.
  • Strong proficiency in Python and its ecosystem, including frameworks such as Django and Flask.
  • Practical experience with Kafka, Kubernetes, or comparable technologies.
  • Familiarity with AWS and its range of services.
  • Experience in architecting, building, and maintaining event-driven microservice architectures in live environments.
  • In-depth knowledge of database internals, including data structures, indexing, query optimization, and performance tuning to ensure the efficient operation of databases. Experience with challenges related to distributed databases, such as network partitioning, is essential.
  • Experience in configuring, managing, and maintaining database clusters for high availability and failover support, including knowledge of various clustering architectures, distributed databases, partitioning/sharding data, consensus algorithms, and load balancing strategies.
  • Proven track record of owning features from the conceptual stage through to deployment.
  • A strong focus on productivity and a commitment to enhancing efficiency.
  • Bonus points for experience with ElasticSearch.
  • Must be located in New York City and open to a hybrid work model requiring at least three days in the office each week.

When we identify the right candidate, we aim to present a competitive offer. Actual compensation packages at the time of offers are based on various factors unique to each candidate, including but not limited to: desired salary, skills/experience, and role-dependent factors such as software expertise, comparable salaries in the NYC area, and our commitment to equitable pay for equal work among colleagues. The compensation for this role is targeted at $175,000-$200,000, plus equity.
