Job Overview
The Clinical Laboratory Specialist is responsible for executing laboratory protocols including compatibility assessments, reference laboratory tasks, specimen handling, conducting tests, and documenting results. Additional responsibilities may include automated labeling, component preparation, and logistics management.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the maintenance and storage of blood components, ensuring proper temperature regulation
- Conduct labeling of blood products
- Manage biohazard waste disposal
- Implement Quality Control measures and perform Preventative Maintenance
- Operate the bexWISE Process and bexWISE Affirm systems
Component Management
- Prepare blood components
- Package recovered plasma for distribution
Logistics Responsibilities
- Process daily orders
- Handle blood shipments and returns
- Manage shipping of recovered plasma
- Oversee inventory control
- Coordinate resource management
- Facilitate FedEx shipments
- Manage importing and exporting tasks
- Perform irradiation of blood products
Laboratory Functions
- Qualify Apheresis Platelets and Plasma
- Conduct lot release procedures
- Send samples to testing laboratories
- Receive and interpret test results
- Handle products with positive test outcomes
- Conduct blood grouping, compatibility testing, antibody detection, and emergency product releases
- Manage Soot-related tasks
- Participate in the RRC Program
RRC Program Duties
- Collect retention samples for antigen typing at Ortho Diagnostics
- Maintain typing records in the laboratory information system
- Recruit new donors for the RRC program based on manufacturer needs
- Organize donor schedules and prepare RRC donor packets
- Collaborate with Community Services for RRC donor recognition
Qualifications
EDUCATION: A Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field, along with current licensure in the State of Tennessee.
SKILLS:
- Exhibit AIDET skills in daily interactions with donors, guests, customers, colleagues, and vendors
- Proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English, with the ability to follow oral and written instructions in accordance with established policies and procedures
- Ability to make informed decisions under pressure
- Demonstrate multitasking capabilities
- Function effectively as a key team member in a high-volume production setting while exhibiting strong organizational skills
- Work independently, meet deadlines, and show initiative
- Operate effectively without direct supervision
- Make straightforward decisions based on clear options
- Communicate effectively with staff and the public to foster positive community relations
- Contribute to a collaborative work environment and promote team efforts
- Possess basic computer skills in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
