Responsibilities

As a Medical Laboratory Specialist, you will be responsible for performing a wide range of laboratory procedures, including waived, moderate, and highly complex tests. You will work independently, using both manual and automated methods, to ensure accurate and reliable results. Your duties will include:

  • Performing and documenting maintenance on instruments and equipment
  • Reviewing the accuracy of patient results prior to releasing or reporting
  • Recognizing age-specific differences in expected results for newborns to geriatrics
  • Ensuring that testing of proficiency testing samples is performed in the same manner as patient samples
  • Assisting in the development and maintenance of laboratory policies and procedures

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need to possess a current license issued by the State in which the laboratory is located, if such licensing is required. You will also need to meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be a doctor of medicine or doctor of osteopathy licensed to practice medicine or osteopathy in the State in which the laboratory is located or have earned a doctoral, master's, or bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution
  • Have earned an associate degree in a chemical, physical or biological science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution
  • Be a high school graduate or equivalent and have successfully completed an official military medical laboratory procedures course of at least 50 weeks duration and have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician)
  • Have earned a high school diploma or equivalent and have documentation of training appropriate for the testing performed prior to analyzing patient specimens

Working Conditions

This position will work less than 19 hours per week on an afternoon shift. You must be available to help with weekend and holiday rotation. Prior experience in a hospital lab environment is preferred but not required.
