Job Title: Building Inspector

Leon County, FL is seeking a skilled Building Inspector to join our team. As a Building Inspector, you will be responsible for ensuring compliance with building codes and regulations in residential and commercial structures.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Inspect residential and commercial structures for compliance with building codes and regulations.
  • Conduct follow-up inspections and assess re-inspection fees as necessary.
  • Ensure foundation footings, slabs, grade beams, and pilings are compliant with approved construction plans.
  • Collect and review FEMA flood elevation certificates for completion and correctness.
  • Inspect structural framing, window and door framing, wall bracing, engineered wind analysis, and fire blocking/draft stopping for compliance with approved plans.
  • Perform roofing inspections, including dry-in materials, insulation materials, roof coverings, and required flashing as per approved construction plans.
  • Enforce FEMA flood plain requirements, including the correctness of elevation certification forms.
  • Inspect residential and commercial structures for compliance with the Florida Plumbing Code, Leon County ordinances, and accessibility requirements.
  • Record all inspections using the current permit tracking system.
  • Perform follow-up inspections and assess re-inspection fees as necessary.
  • Inspect under-slab drain and supply piping for compliance with approved plans.
  • Inspect installation of required backflow prevention devices to ensure compliance with cross-connection control standards.
  • Inspect plumbing system venting requirements to ensure conformity with approved plans.
  • Inspect required clean-out devices at the building drain system.
  • Inspect grinder pump installations to ensure compliance with plumbing code requirements and City of Tallahassee low-pressure sewer connection requirements.
  • Inspect residential and commercial structures for compliance with the Florida Mechanical and Gas Codes, Leon County ordinances, and accessibility requirements.
  • Record all inspections using the current permit tracking system.
  • Perform follow-up inspections and assess re-inspection fees as necessary.
  • Inspect rough-in of building duct work system, including junctions, register branches, and duct hangers.
  • Inspect required exhaust systems, including cooking range hoods and restroom exhaust requirements.
  • Inspect installation of air handling units and compressor units for compliance with State Energy Efficiency Code.
  • Inspect for required gas pressure requirements and final installation of gas appliances.
  • Inspect for required installation of all fire dampers and emergency shut-down devices.
  • Inspect residential and commercial structures for compliance with the National Electrical Code.
  • Record all inspections using the current permit tracking system.
  • Perform follow-up inspections and assess re-inspection fees as necessary.
  • Inspect correct installation of all electrical system wiring, including wire sizes, wire insulation requirements, and wire protection.
  • Inspect required smoke detection devices to ensure compliance with approved plans.
  • Inspect main distribution panel to ensure it is properly located and installed circuit breakers are properly labeled.
  • Inspect and ensure required electrical system grounding components are installed and ensure all grounding system connections are secure.
  • Inspect and ensure all arc-fault and ground-fault devices are installed and working properly.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Five years of experience as required by Chapter 468 FL Statute in one of the following disciplines: building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, or a one- and two-family dwelling inspector.
  • Valid Class "E" State of Florida Driver's License and favorable driving record at the time of employment.
  • Provisional DBPR Inspector Certification.
