Summary:


The Patient Safety Monitor operates under the guidance of the Nurse Manager and under the direct supervision of a Professional Registered Nurse or delegated Licensed Practical Nurse to observe patients for harmful and/or dangerous behaviors.

This role is a crucial element of the continuum of care, aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of patients at risk for injury.

The observation and care activities are tailored for each patient as directed by the medical staff.

The Patient Safety Monitor is also tasked with completing various departmental specific duties to support optimal department safety and functioning, actively participating as a member of the treatment team.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with the Professional Registered Nurse or delegated Licensed Practical Nurse to monitor patient behavior and uphold patient safety.
  • Effectively performs a range of patient care activities to meet the daily personal needs and comfort of the patient.
  • Maintains constant observation of the patient, ensuring an uninterrupted line of sight.
  • Ensures patient safety at all times.
  • Reports any activities outside of established parameters to the Nurse Manager, Professional Registered Nurse, delegated Licensed Practical Nurse, or Nursing Assistant.
  • Adheres to suicide precautions and guidelines for patients under such precautions.
  • Communicates information appropriately in line with hospital policies and procedures.
  • Adjusts schedule as necessary to enhance team performance.
  • Demonstrates a daily commitment to the mission, vision, and values of New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
  • Exhibits positive interpersonal relations with all members of the patient care team.
  • Promotes and maintains customer satisfaction.
  • Engages in personal development to enhance growth on an annual basis.

Qualifications:
Education:
High School Diploma or GED Required

Experience:
Preferred Previous hospital experience

Licensure/Certification:
De-Escalation Techniques (within 90 days of employment) Required
Life Support Responder (within 90 days of employment) Required
Management of Aggressive Behaviors (MOAB) Training (within 90 days after completion of De-Escalation Training) Required

Additional Skills/Requirements:
  • Ability to successfully complete generic and department-specific skills validation and competency testing as applicable, knowledgeable regarding guidelines for infection control, body substance precautions, patient safety, and body mechanics.
  • Ability to work with patients of all age groups or act as a companion.
  • Basic computer skills for documentation.
