Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Pharmacy Technician to join our team at Brown University Health. As a Pharmacy Technician, you will play a critical role in assisting pharmacists in the formulation, preparation, and dispensing of medications and pharmaceutical supplies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist pharmacists in the formulation and preparation of medications, including reviewing practitioner medication orders and preparing medications for review and dispensing.
  • Perform general operations of electronic drug dispensing systems, including maintaining, assigning, refilling, and removing medication, including controlled substances, and generating and interpreting reports.
  • Maintain operating room medication inventory, including controlled substances, and prepare intravenous admixtures, including chemotherapy, critical care infusions, and pediatric infusions, utilizing aseptic techniques in a controlled environment.
  • Prepare and repack non-sterile pharmaceutical products, according to computer-generated and/or pharmacist-approved formulation records, including proper technique, labeling, and expiration dating.
  • Perform controlled substance discrepancy resolution in conjunction with other licensed healthcare professionals, participate in controlled substances inventory management, and deliver medications to clinic, procedural treatment, operating room, and patient care areas.
  • Repackage and label medications for distribution, prepare emergency medication kits for pharmacist review and distribution, and perform routine procurement and inventory management of medications, including ordering and receipt of chemotherapy and other pharmaceutical supplies.
  • Process medication requisitions for departments and laboratories, reconcile patient and department medication charges, and perform routine preventive maintenance to all equipment, according to standards.
  • Assist in maintaining related Pharmacy records and files, perform equipment calibration and maintenance, and maintain the Pharmacy and medication supply areas in a neat and orderly fashion, ensuring medications are stored under proper conditions for light, temperature, sanitation, and segregation.
  • Participate in quality assessment and improvement activities and medication safety initiatives of the Pharmacy and the hospital, utilize approved processes for reporting actual, prevented, and near-miss medication errors, and answer the telephone and triage as appropriate.
  • Interact with internal and external customers in accordance with hospital Customer Service Standards, assist in orientation and training of other pharmacy technicians and interns, and perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • High school graduate or equivalent, completion of one to two years of college preferred.
  • Maintains current unrestricted Rhode Island Pharmacy Technician licensure.
  • Holds and maintains current National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) or has a minimum of one-year licensed pharmacy technician work experience, sits for National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) exam within first 6 months of hire, and achieves and maintains National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) within 12 months of hire.
  • Possesses basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Possesses physical ability to lift, carry, and maneuver medication delivery equipment and pharmaceutical-related inventories, including extended periods of work time spent standing and walking.
  • Requires the visual and manual dexterity to operate a computer.
  • New hires into this position must successfully pass a drug screen in conformance with Rhode Island State Law.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements

The Pharmacy Technician will work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, with frequent interactions with pharmacists, healthcare professionals, and patients. The successful candidate will possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Independent Action and Supervisory Responsibility

The Pharmacy Technician will perform independently within department policies and practices, referring specific complex problems to the supervisor where clarification of departmental policies and procedures may be required. The successful candidate will not have supervisory responsibility.
