Job Summary:

As a Pharmacy Technician at Brown University Health, you will play a vital role in assisting pharmacists in the formulation, preparation, and dispensing of medications and pharmaceutical supplies. You will work under the supervision of a pharmacist and direction of a technician group leader or technician specialist to perform a variety of technical and support tasks.

Key Responsibilities:

• Review and prepare medications for review and dispensing by a pharmacist.
• Maintain and operate the electronic drug dispensing system (EDDS) used in the inventory control and distribution of pharmaceuticals and related supplies.
• Prepare intravenous admixtures, including chemotherapy, critical care infusions, and pediatric infusions, utilizing aseptic techniques in a controlled environment.
• Work in a United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) 797 clean room environment and in accordance with procedures of the same.
• Perform controlled substance discrepancy resolution in conjunction with other licensed health care professionals.
• Participate in controlled substances inventory management in the Pharmacy and the hospital.
• Deliver medications to clinic procedural treatment operating room and patient care areas, and retrieve medication orders.
• Repackage and label medications for distribution in accordance with pharmacist-approved packaging and labeling records.
• Prepare various emergency medication kits for pharmacist review and distribution to patient care areas.
• Perform routine procurement and inventory management of medications, including ordering and receipt of chemotherapy and other pharmaceutical supplies.
• Complete necessary paperwork for controlled substance procurement and verify receipt of such.
• Process medication requisitions for departments and laboratories for pharmacist verification.
• Reconcile patient and department medication charges.
• Perform routine preventive maintenance to all equipment according to standards for same.
• Assist in maintaining related Pharmacy records and files, performing equipment calibration and maintenance.
• Assist in maintaining the Pharmacy and medication supply areas in a neat and orderly fashion, ensuring medications are stored under proper conditions for light, temperature, sanitation, and segregation.

Requirements:

• High school graduate or equivalent. Completion of one to two years of college preferred.
• Maintains current unrestricted Rhode Island Pharmacy Technician licensure.
• Holds and maintains current National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) or has a minimum of one-year licensed pharmacy technician work experience, sits for National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) exam within first 6 months of hire, and achieves and maintains National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) within 12 months of hire.
• Possesses basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

• Possesses physical ability to lift, carry, and maneuver medication delivery equipment and pharmaceutical-related inventories, including extended periods of work time spent standing and walking.
• Requires the visual and manual dexterity to operate a computer.
• New hires into this position must successfully pass a drug screen in conformance with Rhode Island State Law.

Independent Action:
Performs independently within department policies and practices. Refers specific complex problems to supervisor where clarification of departmental policies and procedures may be required.
