Outpost is a pioneering company in the space economy, developing innovative Earth return vehicles that enable safe and efficient payload recovery from space to Earth. Our flagship project, the Ferryall spacecraft, is supported by the U.S. Government, with four missions supported over the next four years. We're also developing the Carryall vehicle, designed to return up to 10 tons from space, significantly expanding the scope of what's possible for space-based operations.

Job Summary

We're seeking a highly skilled Head Mechanical Engineer to lead our mechanical engineering team and be responsible for all aspects and full lifecycle of the design, analysis, construction/procurement, and verification of large spacecraft structural systems. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of designing, analyzing, and building mechanical systems that have flown in space, and will be able to integrate thermal, NASTRAN, full system scale models, run full system analyses, and lead a team of mechanical engineers.

Responsibilities
  • Design, analyze, and build mechanical systems that have flown in space
  • Lead a team of mechanical engineers and ensure proper management processes
  • Work in close partnership with cross-functional teams and management
  • Write structural margins using hand calculations and finite element analysis (FEA)
  • Create manufacturing and assembly plans for large scale spacecraft
  • Design and conduct structural development, acceptance, & qualification tests
  • Integrate mechanical systems with electrical systems
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace, electrical engineering, mathematics, physics or related field
  • 8+ years of experience designing, analyzing and building mechanical spacecraft systems
  • At least 2 years leading one or more mechanical engineers
  • Work on-site in Santa Monica, CA
