Job Description:

We are seeking a skilled Laboratory Specialist Supervisor to join our team at South Mountain Community College. As a key member of our faculty, you will supervise and train staff in the preparation of equipment and materials used for lecture and laboratory experiments in the physical lab sciences (Chemistry, Geo sciences, and Physics).

Responsibilities:
  • Assist faculty in designing, piloting, and troubleshooting physical science labs.
  • Prepare lab set-ups and ensure all materials are available for lab.
  • Supervise science lab technicians and student workers, as well as grant recipients working in the labs.
  • Maintain budget, stock room, prep room, inventory, and order materials as needed.
  • Help break down labs and clean labs and equipment, including inventory and lab prep sheet maintenance through troubleshooting labs.
  • Assemble and repair equipment.
Requirements:

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • An Associate's degree from a regionally accredited institution or equivalent experience.
  • Four years of directly related full-time experience, such as providing assistance to students in an instructional setting or preparing, maintaining, and delivering equipment, supplies, or other related instructional materials used for laboratory activities, including two years of lead work or senior-level experience.
  • Or High School Diploma/GED and six years of directly related full-time experience, including two years of lead work or senior-level experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor's degree earned from an accredited institution of higher learning.
  • Experience working in an academic laboratory setting.
  • Experience providing guidance related to laboratory experiments.
  • Knowledge of or ability to help pilot science laboratories for college-level classes for the physical sciences.
  • Experience in maintaining a budget.
  • Experience in supervising laboratory staff, including laboratory technicians and college work-study students.
Work Environment:

This position requires flexible work hours, with afternoon, evening, and weekend hours possible. You may be required to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Exposure to chemicals and organisms that may present hazards if not handled properly is also a possibility.
