Clemson University is seeking applications for the position of Veterinary Consultant within the Office of Animal Research, part of the Division of Research. We are looking for a veterinarian with a strong background in laboratory animal medicine and research facilitation.

The Veterinary Consultant will report directly to the University Veterinarian and will play a key role in supporting the animal research initiatives at Clemson University.

This position involves close collaboration with animal research personnel, faculty researchers, and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) to enhance services for the university's research community while upholding Clemson University's mission and strategic objectives, ensuring compliance and the humane treatment of animals.

About the Animal Research Program
The ethical management and utilization of animals are fundamental to Clemson University's mission. In addition to educational endeavors, the university maintains a robust research portfolio encompassing biomedical, agricultural, and wildlife studies. The animal facilities include a central vivarium, an aquatic research facility, and multiple agricultural farms. The establishment of a College of Veterinary Medicine is underway, and all animal facilities at Clemson University, including the farms, hold AAALAC accreditation.

Key Responsibilities

Animal Care and Clinical Management: Oversees or directly manages clinical care for various species (90% laboratory and 10% agricultural) either personally or through supervision of animal care staff. Participates in providing shared emergency on-call services for the Office of Animal Resources. Maintains all necessary credentials for federal and/or state veterinary licensure, USDA Class II accreditation, and DEA licensure.

Research Facilitation: Collaborates with the University Veterinarian to review and assist in the development of IACUC protocols for research and teaching. Aids researchers with animal-related projects and activities as needed to support the university's research goals, including surgical procedures, anesthesia, and imaging. Ensures that technical staff and research personnel are adequately trained to conduct IACUC-approved procedures.

Compliance Oversight: Aids the University Veterinarian and Clemson staff in ensuring that protocols, programs, and facilities adhere to relevant laws, regulations, and guidelines, providing support to the Clemson IACUC as necessary. Works with the University Veterinarian and other staff to maintain readiness for USDA and AAALAC inspections and site visits. Collaborates with farm managers to ensure humane animal care and compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Operational Management: Assists the University Veterinarian and facility administration in managing the operations of the Office of Animal Resources and contributes to both short- and long-term strategic planning.

Education and Outreach: Supports the University Veterinarian in developing and delivering educational materials to ensure Clemson personnel are informed about relevant laws, regulations, and veterinary medical practices. Reviews and updates standard operating procedures as necessary. Serves as a guest lecturer when requested.

Qualifications

Minimum Education: DVM/VMD (or ECFVG equivalent) from an AVMA-accredited institution.

Minimum Experience: A minimum of 2 years of experience in laboratory animal medicine.

Licenses and Certifications: DVM/South Carolina State License or eligibility (to be obtained within 3 months), Controlled drug license (SC DPH/DEA) or eligibility (to be obtained within 3 months), Driver's license, USDA Class II accreditation.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in a large, complex research animal care and use program. ACLAM eligibility or certification, ACLAM residency training, PhD or other advanced degrees in a relevant scientific discipline. Significant experience in laboratory animal medicine and care for various laboratory animal species, including but not limited to rodents, fish, ruminants, rabbits, and swine. Experience in the care of agricultural animals is also preferred.
