Job Summary

As a Financial Counselor at Vidant Health, you will play a critical role in analyzing financial, demographic, and clinical information to locate or assist patients in finding eligible payment sources. Your primary responsibility will be to aggressively pursue the collection of high-dollar patient account balances while evaluating and auditing patient accounts pending Medicaid approval or denial. You will serve as a resource for Social Work and Discharge Planning, performing all duties of a Patient Counselor and Assistant Patient Counselors as required. Additionally, you will demonstrate service excellence in all interactions with patients, families, and healthcare teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Screen candidates and make necessary room visits for self-pay and underinsured patients.
  • Determine eligibility and initiate referrals for Medicaid, state agency programs, federal assistance, or other third-party payers.
  • Contact employers to ascertain health insurance or workers' compensation benefits.
  • Establish patients' overall financial ability to pay, verifying real and personal assets, and initiate verification and pre-admission notification per payer requirements.
  • Communicate with patients to collect on accounts, starting in-house until third-party coverage is found, payment arrangements are made, or accounts are referred to bad debt or charity write-off.
  • Follow up with patients, representatives, or caseworkers at DSS for pending status, dates of coverage, or denial.
  • Notify DSS of outstanding balances, reducing patient deductibles, and ensuring retroactive coverage dates.
  • Interpret Medicaid policy, overturning or appealing Department of Social Service denials.
Requirements
  • High School plus 2 years or more of formal training or education in Health Occupations, Business, or related fields, or an Associate College Degree is required.
  • 3 to 4 years of previous collecting experience and working with the public, such as Doctor's offices, Business Offices, or DSS, is required.
  • One additional year of related experience may be substituted for one year of the required education, with a maximum substitution of two years.
