Organization Overview: NAMI San Diego & Imperial Counties (National Alliance on Mental Illness) is a nonprofit entity dedicated to providing complimentary education, support services, and advocacy aimed at enhancing the quality of life for individuals impacted by mental health conditions.


Key Responsibilities: The role involves facilitating the effective operation of the San Diego County Peer-Run Support Warmline, which operates daily from 3:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. This position is conducted remotely, necessitating internet access and a laptop. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, responding to live calls, returning voice messages promptly, gathering and entering demographic data, documenting interactions in a database, and offering suitable resources. Additionally, the specialist must be capable of training, mentoring, and serving as a role model for peers who may volunteer on the support line. Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is essential. This is a part-time role requiring 20 hours of work per week.


Responsibilities Include:

  • Responding to live calls utilizing a peer support methodology.
  • Timely follow-up on voicemails.
  • Collecting and inputting demographic information.
  • Documenting calls within the database.
  • Providing relevant resources to callers.
  • Employing recovery-oriented language.
  • Mentoring and guiding new peers and volunteers.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Reporting Structure: This position reports directly to the Warmline Program Coordinator.

Qualifications:

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English - fluency required.
  • Must reside in California for this remote role.
  • Completion of a Peer Support Specialist training program or two years of supervised experience in peer support within the public behavioral health sector.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to connect with peers through active listening and empathy.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities, time management skills, and understanding of personal and professional boundaries.
  • Experience working with diverse populations and a commitment to teamwork.
  • Proficient in technology, including computer applications and cloud-based communication platforms.
  • Ability to mentor fellow team members enthusiastically.
  • Understanding of professional boundaries and confidentiality standards.
  • Self-identified as a Peer with a foundation in personal recovery.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and uphold ethical standards.
  • Familiarity with San Diego County's mental health services and available social services.
  • Reliable internet access and effective communication skills.
  • Consistent and dependable attendance.
