Position Overview
Under direct supervision, this role involves conducting security and law enforcement operations to safeguard individuals and property within the jurisdiction of the Port District while ensuring adherence to all relevant Federal, State, and local regulations.
Compensation: $77, $99,000.00 AnnuallyKey Responsibilities
PRIMARY DUTIES INCLUDE:
- Monitoring and patrolling designated areas within Port properties, remaining vigilant for any unusual or potentially hazardous situations.
- Responding to the arrival and departure of vessels, completing necessary documentation in line with established protocols.
- Investigating any unusual or suspicious incidents and making informed decisions regarding appropriate actions.
- Answering calls for assistance and providing necessary information, directions, or support.
- Enforcing applicable laws and regulations; issuing warnings and citations, and making arrests when warranted; providing testimony in court as required.
- Conducting initial and follow-up investigations related to crimes, accidents, and injuries; ensuring timely and accurate reporting.
- Managing crime scene protocols, including identifying witnesses, conducting interviews, and preserving evidence.
- Coordinating traffic control as necessary.
- Maintaining various logs and records; monitoring local agency radio frequencies for emergencies and police-related incidents.
- Utilizing radio, telephone, and computer systems, including CAD/RMS/CLETS terminals as required.
- Providing first aid and coordinating emergency responses as needed.
- Ensuring compliance with Department of Homeland Security standards.
- Performing other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
To be successful in this role, candidates must be capable of performing each essential duty effectively. The qualifications listed below represent the knowledge, skills, and abilities required. Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent, along with completion of a California P.O.S.T. Basic Academy. A P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate is preferred.
Knowledge:
- Understanding of California Penal Code, Vehicle Code, Code of Federal Regulation, and other relevant laws and regulations.
- Familiarity with modern policing techniques, including forensic sciences, laws of arrest, and search and seizure protocols.
- Awareness of effective safety principles and practices related to law enforcement.
Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to exercise sound judgment in assessing situations and making decisive actions within legal frameworks.
- Proficient in writing clear and concise reports and documentation.
- Capable of effectively performing law enforcement duties; maintaining proficiency in firearms and first aid.
- Ability to wear required departmental equipment while fulfilling police officer responsibilities.
- Capacity to remain calm and take appropriate actions in high-pressure situations, while engaging courteously with the public.
- Ability to read, interpret, and apply complex laws, procedures, and policies, following both written and verbal instructions.
- Meeting physical, psychological, and background standards necessary for the Police Officer role.
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with Port staff, tenants, and other law enforcement entities.
- Proficient in operating radio, telephone, and computer systems, including CAD/RMS/CLETS terminals.
- Demonstrating advanced computer skills with word processing, spreadsheets, and departmental database software; ability to learn new software quickly.
- Flexibility to work various shifts, including holidays, weekends, and emergency overtime, and availability on call as needed.
Certificates, Licenses, or Registrations: Must possess and maintain a valid California driver's license and be insurable under the Port's liability policy. Must hold current First Aid, CPR, and Bloodborne Pathogens certifications. NIMS ICS-100 certification is required within one month of employment. Completion of a California P.O.S.T. Basic Academy is mandatory. Candidates must pass a comprehensive POST background check and be able to obtain and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card.
