We are seeking a highly motivated and organized Community Organizer Fellow to work closely with our team to bridge low-income renters to legal support, community-based legal strategies, and high-impact legal advocacy.

About the Role:

The Equal Justice Works Community Organizer Fellow will play a key role in connecting our attorneys' advocacy to defend tenants' individual defense against instability and eviction to their right to respond collectively and proactively. The Fellow will work directly supervised by the Advocacy Director for Housing and Community Development and the Assistant Advocacy Director for Tenant Right to Counsel Project in MLA's Statewide Advocacy Support (SAS) Unit.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop outreach priorities using relationships with existing MLA clients and data analysis;
  • Apply varied outreach and engagement techniques to reach renters, including door-to-door canvassing, tabling, presentations, one-to-one visits, etc.
  • Create educational handouts, presentations, and other Know-Your-Rights materials;
  • Organize educational sessions and meetings with service providers and community-anchor institutions;
  • Establish a sustained presence in renter communities;
  • Build trust with tenants and leaders through active allyship;
  • Assist tenants and leaders through referrals to MLA attorneys and to other resources;
  • Identify issues tenants desire to address through legal assistance;
  • Assess the potential among groups of tenants to assert their rights collectively, such as through formation of a tenant association;
  • Support MLA attorneys in sustaining relationships with groups of tenants while advancing legal strategies.
  • Build stakeholder relationships to further outreach and legal support strategies;
  • Plan and conduct outreach to communities and community organizations to further housing stability and affordability for low-income community members;
  • Engage in peer-to-peer learning with other Equal Justice Works Housing Justice Program Fellows;
  • Identify larger trends and issues for MLA colleagues to develop strategies and research national best practices to respond to those trends and needs;
  • Actively contribute to and participate in Housing Justice Program cohort activities;
  • Exercise leadership competencies as an Equal Justice Works Fellow;
  • Contribute to required programmatic reporting and overall program evaluation.
Qualifications:
  • Commitment to social justice;
  • Ability to develop and maintain a variety of relationships on multiple levels;
  • Excellent writing, communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations;
  • Strong oral communication skills and the ability to work as a team member;
  • Prior experience in implementing independent projects or assignments;
  • Experience with delivering training and presentations;
  • Diverse economic, social, and cultural experiences and a second language are preferred;
  • Knowledge of housing law and/or experience with housing and benefits agencies;
  • An ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary setting to facilitate a coordinated community response and provide holistic services to clients;
  • Creativity and flexibility in solving problems and meeting challenges.
About MLA:

Maryland Legal Aid (MLA) is a nonprofit legal services law firm that provides free, civil legal services to low-income people in Baltimore City and Maryland's 23 counties from 12 offices. The firm handles cases involving a wide range of issues, including family, housing, government benefits, healthcare, employment, and consumer law. MLA also represents children in CINA (Child in Need of Assistance) proceedings in 22 jurisdictions. Other vulnerable populations, such as homeowners facing foreclosure, migrant and seasonal farm workers, people with developmental and mental health disabilities, nursing home and assisted living residents, and veterans seeking benefits and assistance with related legal issues, also receive representation through special projects. MLA's Community Lawyering Initiative, which includes its Lawyer in the Library program, assists with expunging criminal records to remove barriers to obtaining housing, employment, and child custody through clinics held in libraries, community centers, non-profit organizations, places of worship, schools, healthcare facilities, and other communal places.
