The Meharry Medical College School of Medicine is on the lookout for qualified candidates to fill a faculty role focused on education at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level within the anatomical sciences.
The Department of Professional and Medical Education, along with the School of Medicine, values exceptional teaching and innovative contributions to medical education as key factors for career advancement.
The ideal candidate will collaborate with a diverse team of clinicians and scholars to teach, as well as to develop, implement, assess, and share scholarly work in medical education.
We encourage applications from individuals with three or more years of teaching experience in the anatomical sciences, ideally within a medical school framework.
Key Responsibilities include:- Deliver instruction in the anatomical sciences, with a strong emphasis on gross anatomy.
- Create curricular materials for educational activities. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in innovative teaching strategies that foster active and student-centered learning (e.g., team-based learning, flipped classrooms, or case-based instruction).
- Coordinate and integrate instructional activities and curricular resources with fellow faculty to enhance the educational experience for students.
- Establish learning objectives and competency standards for undergraduate medical students.
- Contribute to student assessment processes, including the development, implementation, and evaluation of assessment tools and procedures.
- Design and implement effective remediation strategies for students who do not meet established competency standards.
- Utilize and advocate for best practices in education. Provide mentorship, training, and support for colleagues to enhance instructional quality across the curriculum and promote the adoption of improved teaching techniques among faculty.
- Maintain and enhance expertise in teaching and scholarship through self-directed learning and participation in faculty development initiatives.
- Advise and mentor medical students on academic and curricular issues.
- Collaborative scholarly work is encouraged, and while not mandatory, external funding is valued.
- Administrative and Scholarly Activities include, but are not limited to: fulfilling administrative responsibilities such as committee service, course directorships, and/or college service.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Active engagement in local, regional, national, or international professional organizations relevant to the individual's field.
- Prior administrative experience within a medical school department or medical education program.
- Expertise and experience in supervising and assessing medical students.
- Experience teaching subjects related to scientific methodologies, the philosophy of science, clinician-scientist collaboration, and the role of scientists in medicine and society.
- Demonstrated interests outside of biomedical or medical education.
- Active participation in community initiatives.
- Scholarly contributions within the individual's discipline evidenced by publications, presentations, or recognition as an authority.
- Proven track record of mentoring.
- Ability to demonstrate potential for scholarly and creative activities that would support appointment and advancement in an education-focused foundational science department.
- A terminal degree in anatomical sciences or a closely related field.
- Ability to provide clear evidence of outstanding and effective teaching.
- Candidates must show experience with, or a commitment to, diversity and inclusion.
- Ability to demonstrate potential for scholarly and creative endeavors that would support appointment and advancement in an education-based foundational science department.
