Role Overview: The Pathology Assistant will collaborate with pathologists to ensure accurate and efficient processing of specimens, contributing to the preparation of anatomical diagnoses.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the preparation and performance of gross examination and dissection of surgical pathology specimens.
  • Under the indirect supervision of a pathologist, describe gross anatomic features, dissect surgical specimens, and prepare tissue sections for microscopic examination.
  • Ensure proper specimen accessioning and labeling of surgical pathology specimens.
  • Obtain relevant clinical records, case history, laboratory data, and imaging studies as needed.
  • Photograph specimens as required.
  • Utilize a voice-activated transcription system to dictate gross descriptions.
  • Assist in post-mortem examinations, including obtaining proper authorization and performing or assisting the pathologist in prosection.
  • Procure biological specimens for analysis.
  • Arrange for documentation of the examination, including still and/or video images.
  • Summarize the clinical history and assist the pathologist in preparing the preliminary anatomic diagnosis.
  • Select and prepare tissue sections for microscopic examination.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a health science or related field.
  • Graduate of an accredited Pathologists' Assistant program.
  • Completed at least one year of clinical rotations in autopsy and surgical pathology grossing.
  • ASCP certified as a PA or eligible to sit for the ASCP certification exam.
