Summary:
The Clinical Oncology Nurse Specialist is a registered nurse (RN) dedicated to collaborating with physician practices and multidisciplinary teams to enhance the effective use of services and coordination of care for patients within the Cancer Center service line. This role plays a crucial part in assessing patients' psychosocial, financial, and clinical needs throughout their care journey, ensuring high-quality treatment while supporting the quality metrics of the Cancer Center and RUSH University Medical Center.
The Clinical Oncology Nurse Specialist acts as a vital link between patients, physician practices, the hospital, and the community, performing functions that align with the core competencies of oncology navigation: Care Coordination, Communication, Education, and Professional Role/Care. Additionally, the role encompasses the domains of the Professional Practice Model: Relationships and Caring, Evidence-Based Practice, Technical Expertise, Critical Thinking, and Leadership. The focus of care may include medical oncology, hematology, stem cell transplant, gynecologic oncology, surgery, radiation oncology, cancer screening, or support for multidisciplinary clinics. This RN embodies the mission, vision, and values of RUSH and adheres to the policies and procedures of the institution.
Requirements:
- Current State of Illinois Registered Nurse licensure required
- Minimum of one year of nursing experience
- Earned nursing degree at the baccalaureate level or higher
- Preferred experience in oncology nursing
- Preferred oncology nursing certification
Physical Demands:
Ability to travel throughout the Medical Center; some roles may require travel to other care sites.
Responsibilities:
Relationships and Caring:
1. Establishes a therapeutic relationship with patients and families through effective communication while managing a defined patient caseload.
2. Assesses patients for social determinants of health, utilizing findings to develop a care plan and mutual goal setting.
3. Advocates for patients and their families to ensure timely access to treatment and equitable healthcare.
4. Collaborates with all members of the healthcare team in a professional manner to ensure coordinated patient care.
5. Serves as a resource regarding clinical trials and coordinates care with the clinical trial office.
6. Provides psychosocial support and facilitates referrals and transitions of care, ensuring effective use of internal and community resources.
Evidence-Based Practice:
1. Manages symptoms utilizing guidelines and evidence-based practices from oncology resources in collaboration with providers.
2. Performs the role utilizing evidence-based practices established by nationally recognized oncology nursing associations and published research.
Technical Expertise:
1. Responds to patient inquiries and needs through various technologies: My Chart, staff messages, telephone contact, etc.
2. Coordinates and schedules admissions, surgeries, laboratory testing, radiographic exams, and infusions.
3. Performs basic administrative tasks related to the role.
4. Establishes a plan for venous access through assessment of peripheral veins.
5. Performs nursing procedures according to policy.
6. Assists providers with procedures using appropriate techniques.
7. Assesses patient and family learning styles to provide ongoing education regarding diagnosis, staging, treatment, side effects, and self-care.
8. Documents detailed information in the electronic medical record to support assessments and interventions.
Critical Thinking:
1. Reviews medical records to ensure completeness for patient diagnosis and staging; requests additional records as needed.
2. Ensures new patients are scheduled with appropriate providers based on assessments and collaborates to adjust plans as necessary.
3. Evaluates patients in person or remotely to assess current status and needs.
4. Provides telephone triage as defined by guidelines and in collaboration with providers, coordinating care with infusion rooms, home health, urgent care, or emergency departments as required.
5. Recognizes changes in patient status and responds promptly to optimize outcomes.
6. Prioritizes complex patient care based on knowledge and clinical experience.
7. Assesses patient compliance with treatment plans.
Leadership:
1. Demonstrates accountability for professional practice, continuing education, and progress toward achieving goals.
2. Maintains expertise regarding disease, staging, current treatment options, and management of adverse events.
3. Acts as a liaison between practice and referral sources.
4. Participates in quality metric initiatives to support optimal outcomes and value-based metrics.
5. Assists in identifying patients for tumor board, coordinates tumor board activities, and participates in patient presentations and care plan development.
6. Engages in the orientation and education of healthcare team members.
7. Serves as a key member of the multidisciplinary team, promoting patient cohesiveness, efficiency, and patient-centered care.
