Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States Cambridge Public Schools Full time

Position: Creative Arts Therapist 0.67 FTE

Appointment Type: One Year Appointment

Organization: Cambridge Public Schools

Cambridge is a dynamic and diverse city, recognized as a central hub for innovation and education. It is home to prestigious institutions and a thriving community of biotechnology, science, and technology enterprises.

The Cambridge Public Schools (CPS) serves approximately 7,000 students from JK-12, featuring award-winning educators, advanced technology, and innovative educational programs. Each school within the district is unique, yet they share a common vision of providing rigorous, joyful, and culturally responsive learning experiences, alongside personalized support for every student. With over 30% of CPS students speaking a language other than English at home, and more than 65 languages represented among our families, our schools proudly celebrate this rich diversity.

The Creative Arts Therapist collaborates within an interdisciplinary team to deliver evidence-based therapeutic services aimed at addressing the mental health, social/emotional, cognitive, communication, and physical needs of students in the CPS system.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate engaging, culturally sensitive, trauma-informed, and client-centered individual and group therapy sessions utilizing music as a therapeutic tool.
  • Work collaboratively with clients, educators, interdisciplinary teams, and families to establish clinical objectives.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation, including intakes, assessments, progress notes, and annual reports as required.
  • Design and implement therapeutic interventions that assist students in:
    • Managing stress and anxiety effectively.
    • Enhancing emotional regulation and impulse control.
    • Improving classroom engagement and attendance.
    • Fostering social connections and reducing feelings of isolation.
    • Mitigating harmful behaviors.
    • Boosting cognitive abilities and academic performance.
    • Encouraging self-expression and self-awareness.
    • Increasing motivation and engagement in their educational journey.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Conduct whole-class sessions focused on monthly social-emotional learning themes and provide classroom support as needed.
  • Offer music-based wellness sessions for faculty and staff to promote well-being and community building.
  • Deliver presentations to staff and families to enhance understanding of the benefits of music therapy within the CPS framework.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

As the prospective Creative Arts Therapist, you will ideally possess many of the following attributes and qualifications:

  • MT-BC (Music Therapy Board Certification) is required.
  • Master's Degree in music therapy, mental health counseling, or a related discipline.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Ability to effectively plan, facilitate, and document therapeutic sessions.
  • Proficiency in clinical improvisation, vocal performance, guitar, keyboard, music technology, and songwriting.
  • Strong communication skills for interacting with students, educators, staff, administrators, families, and other stakeholders.
  • Experience in school-based therapeutic practices.
  • Physical ability to transport and manage instruments and accessories weighing up to 20 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Multilingual abilities are advantageous but not mandatory (Portuguese, Spanish, Haitian Creole).
  • Capability to supervise music therapy interns and practicum students.
  • LMHC licensure or pending status.

Application Process:

Interested candidates are encouraged to submit a resume and a thoughtful cover letter detailing how their skills, experience, and commitment to equity in education align with the qualifications for this position.

At Cambridge Public Schools, we are dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment that values diverse perspectives and backgrounds. We believe that a team reflecting a variety of identities and experiences enhances our ability to serve our communities effectively. We welcome applicants to bring their authentic selves to the application process.
