Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Registered Nurse, the Surgical Technologist plays a vital role in assisting the surgical team by providing both direct and indirect patient care in the Operating Room. This position is essential in ensuring high-quality healthcare through a professional, compassionate, and responsive approach to patients, physicians, and colleagues.

The Surgical Technologist is expected to possess a solid foundation of knowledge, judgment, and skills derived from biological, physiological, behavioral, and social sciences as part of their training. They assist the surgical team in recognizing patient needs and contribute to planning and initiating appropriate interventions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage in performance improvement initiatives within the hospital or department.
  • Assist in maintaining cleanliness of light fixtures, tables, and surgical stands.
  • Check and prepare supplies, instruments, and equipment according to preference cards.
  • Scrub for assigned surgical procedures.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgeon during operations and maintain a safe, sterile environment.
  • Utilize supplies and sutures efficiently.
  • Handle all specimens with accuracy.
  • Prepare the patient for surgery by assisting in cleaning prior to dressing application.
  • Support the care and maintenance of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the identification, care, and operation of all surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Assist in the cleaning and restocking of operating rooms.
  • Update preference cards as necessary.
  • Adhere to Universal Precautions protocols.
  • Participate in staff meetings.
  • Seek opportunities for process improvement within the department and across departments.
  • Act as a clinical resource for staff, students, and volunteers, contributing to a collaborative environment that ensures quality patient care.
  • Implement measures to guarantee patient safety.

Qualifications:

  • Current certification as a surgical technologist
  • BLS certification (AHA)
  • ACLS certification preferred
  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program - REQUIRED
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience as an OB Technician in an acute care setting.
  • Experience in an acute care hospital environment is essential.
