Job Summary:
The Tool & Die Maker plays a critical role in the operation and maintenance of high-speed manufacturing equipment at our Dubuque, Iowa manufacturing location. Reporting directly to manufacturing floor supervision and management, the successful candidate will be responsible for performing various tasks, including:
- Performing work requiring a thorough knowledge of machine shop and tool room practices and techniques, properties of various materials, and the principles of application and operations of various types of tools, jigs, fixtures, and dies
- Making repairs or alterations to end and tongue dies, including the manufacture of replacement parts as needed
- Using precision measuring instruments to assemble, fit, align, and adjust parts to very exact tolerances
- Managing tooling inventories, setting up tool packs, measuring precision tolerances, and working with assembly set-ups
- Studying specifications such as blueprints, sketches, models, or descriptions to determine materials required and machines to be used to fabricate parts
- Setting up and operating machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, and other equipment to machine parts
- Interacting closely with the operations team to plan, troubleshoot, and analyze production and equipment issues and concerns and come up with solutions
- Running quality checks on product in line with customer requirements
- Performing other job-related duties as required or assigned
Requirements:
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
- Five to ten years of experience in a manufacturing environment
- Thorough knowledge of working with ferrous, non-ferrous, and non-metallic materials, cutting oils, grinding compounds, and other processing materials
- Proven competency in the use of micrometers, calipers, and related equipment
- Availability to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and overtime
Competencies:
The successful candidate will demonstrate the following competencies:
- Strong problem-solving skills through an individual and/or collaborative approach
- The ability to read and interpret mechanical blueprints, electrical schematics, and parts specifications
- High competency in the use of micrometers, calipers, and related equipment
- Proven experience with running precision equipment and equipment re-build knowledge
- Ability to work independently or with a team
- Must be able to look at new solutions and "think creatively and strategically" to solve problems
- Effective leadership skills, including conflict resolution, communication, decision making, etc.
- Demonstrated employee relations skills and the ability to motivate people
- Excellent time management and project management skills, as well as the ability to multi-task
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Proven math and computer skills and working knowledge of various Microsoft programs (Excel, Word, Access, etc.)
Physical Requirements:
The associate will be required to:
- Regularly sit, stand, walk, use hands, reach with hands and arms, and may be required to balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
- Lift and/or move up to 50 pounds on occasion
- Have specific vision abilities, including close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus
- Work up to twelve (12) hours shifts, both day and evening
- Have their own tools
Working Conditions:
The associate will work in a plant environment and may be required to move around to different parts of the manufacturing floor. They will be exposed to moving mechanical parts and vehicular traffic in the plant, as well as a wide range of temperatures. The noise level is frequently loud.
