Madison County, AL is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Correctional Officer to join our team. As a Correctional Officer, you will be responsible for maintaining order and providing for the security, care, and direct supervision of inmates/residents in our correctional facility.

Key Responsibilities
  • Patrol assigned areas to ensure the security of inmates, count of inmates, and security of buildings and grounds.
  • Complete OC (pepper spray) and TASER certification.
  • Complete in-house training academy and Field Training program.
  • Remain alert for signs of disorder or tension.
  • Inspect quarters, facilities, and work locations for unauthorized materials.
  • Check sanitary conditions and fire and safety hazards.
  • Keep records and make reports on inmate movements and progress.
  • Escort inmates to work assignments.
  • Maintain order and discipline during work and recreational activities.
  • Ensure inmates meet institutional standards of conduct.
  • Keep perpetual count on assigned inmates.
  • Supervise offenders in various work details.
  • Supervise inmates in court transports and medical transports.
  • Supervise and account for meal services and inmate interactions with medical staff.
  • Take custody of personal effects.
Requirements
  • Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.
  • Must be at least 19 years of age.
  • Must complete one (1) year of promotional probation.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of agency rules and regulations.
  • Ability to supervise effectively and obtain results from offenders.
  • Knowledge of psychology, sociology, alcoholism, drug addiction, and criminology.
  • Ability to defend oneself physically.
  • Ability to operate cell house range and/or dormitory controls.
  • Ability to prepare reports of unusual happenings, accidents, or violations of rules.
  • Alertness and ability to act quickly and effectively in an emergency.
  • Ability to keep abreast of progress and study in the field of corrections.
Physical Requirements
  • Climb multiple flights of steps during rounds.
  • Prolonged walking, standing, pushing, and pulling wheeled carts.
  • Brief periods of intense physical exertion.
  • Periods of repetitive bending, stooping, or crawling.
Certifications or Licenses Required
  • OC (pepper spray) and TASER certification.
  • In-house training academy and Field Training program.
