Summary
Under the supervision of the Animal Services Supervisor or designated representative, the Wildlife Control Officer is responsible for enforcing local ordinances and regulations pertaining to animal control. This role involves patrolling designated areas, addressing public complaints, capturing stray animals, verifying vaccination statuses, and managing wildlife through humane trapping and euthanasia when necessary. The position may also entail caring for animals within the shelter and ensuring its upkeep.
Key Responsibilities:
- Enforce animal control laws by responding to public complaints, patrolling for stray animals, and assisting in the identification of animal ownership.
- Implement State and Federal animal regulations, including rabies control and licensing, and issue citations for violations.
- Manage the removal of wild animals from properties, including setting and maintaining traps, and ensuring safe relocation or humane euthanasia.
- Conduct euthanasia procedures for critically injured wildlife and assist veterinary staff in the evaluation of animals.
- Collaborate with local animal welfare organizations to investigate cases of animal cruelty and maintain accurate records of violations.
- Provide compassionate care to animals in custody and assist the public with adoption processes, licensing, and sterilization programs.
- Maintain detailed records and data entry related to animal control activities and complaints.
- Ensure compliance with licensing requirements for pet shops and breeders.
- Operate the Animal Services vehicle and utilize specialized equipment for animal capture and care.
- Testify in court as needed regarding animal control cases.
- Be available for on-call duties during non-business hours, including weekends and holidays.
- Perform other related tasks as assigned.
- Understanding of animal control ordinances and regulations.
- Knowledge of common animal behaviors and diseases.
- Strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with the public and colleagues.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare reports.
- Proficiency in computer usage for data management.
- High School Diploma or equivalent with at least one year of experience in animal care or related fields.
- Certification as an Animal Control Officer is required within the first year of employment.
- Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screening and background checks.
- Possession of a valid Texas Driver's License.
- Exposure to various hazards including aggressive or diseased animals.
- Physical demands may include lifting heavy objects and performing tasks in adverse weather conditions.
- Standard office equipment, animal control vehicles, and specialized animal handling tools.
