Role Summary
The Director of International Student and Scholar Services functions as the Primary Designated School Official (PDSO) and Responsible Officer (RO), representing Concordia University Wisconsin-Ann Arbor (CUWAA) in compliance with federal regulations. This role leads the immigration advisory team, providing guidance to students, faculty, and staff regarding federal immigration laws affecting F and J visa holders. The Director is responsible for training personnel on immigration policies and CUWAA's best practices, requiring comprehensive knowledge of immigration regulations relevant to international students and scholars in higher education.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the F-/J-1 Immigration Advisory Team - Supervise and mentor Immigration Coordinators and student assistants to ensure proper guidance on immigration procedures, including Work Authorization, Reduced Course Load, Leave of Absences, Transfers, Status Changes, and Re-entry.
- Act as PDSO and represent CUWAA during annual SEVP Field representative evaluations and audits. Responsible for filing I-17 updates and completing re-certification to uphold F-1 SEVIS certification.
- Develop institutional policies for F-1 and J-1 international students and scholars, managing complex immigration cases as the lead expert in immigration matters.
- Prepare and manage the budget for the Office of International Student/Scholar Services.
- Maintain a thorough understanding of immigration regulations, conducting research and benchmarking best practices with peer institutions to ensure compliance.
- Lead the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program and serve as the primary Responsible Officer; provide advice to international students, scholars, and CUWAA faculty/staff on immigration and employment regulations.
- Educate university departments on policies and federal regulations regarding F/J visa students.
- Train new staff and student workers on institutional policies and federal regulations related to F/J visas.
- Support team members in providing services to international students.
- Demonstrate effective collaboration and collegiality.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to engage effectively with diverse constituencies. A customer-oriented approach is essential for assisting students from various cultural backgrounds.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, capable of clearly explaining regulations and training others.
- Excellent organizational abilities, including planning, time management, and project oversight.
- Detail-oriented with a focus on accuracy.
- Proficient problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
- Alignment with the mission and values of Concordia University Wisconsin/Ann Arbor and the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS).
Education & Experience Requirements
- A bachelor's degree in any discipline is required; a master's degree is preferred.
- At least three years of professional experience advising university students is required, ideally in a four-year institution.
- In-depth knowledge of federal regulations governing F and J visa holders is required, with the ability to assess cases and provide informed solutions.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint is required.
