Position Summary

Under the guidance of the School Leader or another certified staff member, the Educational Support Specialist will assist in a range of instructional support tasks for individual or small groups of students, both in special education settings and general classrooms, during and after school hours. These responsibilities are designed to enhance the instructional program and maximize learning opportunities for all students.

The Educational Support Specialist will engage directly with a group of 60-80 elementary school students, providing assistance with homework, academic support, and enrichment activities in an after-school setting. The ability to establish authority through effective leadership, communication, and, most importantly, patience is crucial for success in this role.

This position requires a commitment to working throughout the academic year, with hours typically scheduled from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Compensation for this role is structured over a 12-month period, including scheduled breaks and summer recess, with a competitive hourly rate.

Qualifications

Experience:

A minimum of 1-2 years of experience in a youth development organization, focusing on planning and supervising activities tailored to the developmental needs of young individuals, or equivalent experience.

Required Education/Certifications:

  • CPR/First Aid Certification
  • For Title I paraprofessionals providing instructional support, a high school diploma or equivalent is required, along with one of the following:
    • A.A. degree
    • B.A. degree (or at least 48 college units completed)
    • Passing score on the ETS ParaPro Assessment (minimum score = 460)
    • Passing score on the CBEST exams

Knowledge/Skills Required:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively engage with youth from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated experience working with young people, parents, and community stakeholders.
  • Proficient in Google Suite applications (Google Classroom, Hangouts, Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc.).

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Implement after-school activities within designated core program areas, including academic assistance, homework support, fitness/recreation, arts, and enrichment activities.
  • Assist in documenting program schedules, lesson plans, curriculum, youth participation, and outcomes.
  • Utilize positive behavior and classroom management techniques with students.
  • Accurately track student attendance daily.
  • Support after-school program registration, customer service, and community outreach efforts.
  • Maintain high standards of health and safety to ensure the well-being of students and staff.
  • Participate in all after-school activities, including preparation, setup, takedown, and cleanup to ensure facility cleanliness.
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with students, staff, parents, and community partners.
  • Work with students in small groups or one-on-one to reinforce learning activities in core academic subjects.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean, safe, and cooperative classroom environment.
  • Prepare and organize instructional materials and equipment for classroom activities.
  • Support classroom teachers in modifying curriculum for students as needed.
  • Provide testing accommodations and supervise students during assessments.
  • Review and provide feedback on student assignments.
  • Assist in implementing behavior intervention plans using approved strategies.
  • Facilitate positive social interactions among students with and without disabilities.
  • Model appropriate behavior and attitudes while providing emotional support and guidance to students.
  • Support students during field trips and school events.
  • Assist students in community-based life skills activities as directed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Physical, Mental, and Environmental Demands

Physical: Ability to navigate school and classroom settings, occasional lifting of equipment (1-35 lbs), and physical agility to perform various tasks effectively.

Mental: Ability to manage stress, analyze problems, concentrate for extended periods, and perform routine calculations.

Environmental: Work in a school and classroom environment with frequent interruptions and distractions, adhering to health and safety guidelines.
