Position Overview:


The Physician Assistant is a vital component of the healthcare team, tasked with providing both direct and indirect patient care in accordance with the PA/NP scope of practice.

This role involves evaluating health conditions, creating and implementing treatment strategies in collaboration with the clinical team, and assessing patient responses to interventions.

Responsibilities may be assigned based on the educational background and practice standards of the team member.

A Medical Director will be available to support and/or oversee the Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner in patient assessment and management.

The PA or NP will operate in compliance with Central Maine Healthcare's Policies and Procedures and adhere to HIPAA regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as an advocate for the patient experience
  • Engage with patients through exemplary customer service practices that align with the
Five Essential Practices;
i. Welcome individuals with a friendly demeanor and eye contact
ii. Accompany patients to their destinations instead of merely providing directions

v. Conduct purposeful rounds

  • Conduct comprehensive physical assessments on adult patients, including their medical, family, and social histories
  • Document all patient interactions in the electronic medical record promptly
  • Deliver all aspects of patient care in a manner that prioritizes patient safety and minimizes the risk of medical errors
  • Analyze subjective and objective information to establish a diagnosis
  • Develop treatment plans within the provider's scope of practice
  • Implement therapeutic measures as necessary
  • Order and interpret relevant diagnostic tests, EKGs, and imaging studies
  • Input all orders for treatments and medications to be administered
  • Prescribe both pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments
  • Provide education and counseling to patients regarding their health conditions, test outcomes, discharge planning, and preventive care
  • Make appropriate referrals to other healthcare professionals and community resources
  • Engage in quality improvement initiatives, including the review of medical records and treatment plans
  • Capable of performing all services within the scope of Central Maine Healthcare's urgent care offerings
  • Adhere to MUC and CMH Policies and Procedures
  • Comply with Urgent Care Association (UCA) regulatory standards

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Unrestricted license to practice as a PA or NP in the state of Maine
  • PA candidates must have graduated from an accredited physician assistant program and be NCCPA certified
  • NP candidates must have graduated from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program
  • PAs are required to complete 100 hours of Continuing Medical Education (CME) every two years and pass the recertification exam every six years
  • Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS Certification is mandatory
  • Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider ACLS certification is preferred
  • Experience in Occupational Health is advantageous
  • DOT Medical Exam Certification must be obtained within six months of employment
  • Experience in an emergency department or urgent care environment is preferred

  • Proficient in computer skills, including the use of various electronic medical records
  • Able to work effectively under pressure while maintaining accuracy and managing multiple tasks simultaneously
