Position Details:
The Mechanical Engineering Department at Gonzaga University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position. We seek dedicated teacher-scholars who are committed to equity-minded teaching and possess a strong record of scholarship. The ideal candidate will have expertise in Materials Science & Engineering, including areas such as materials structure/properties, processing/manufacturing, and mechanics of materials.
We are particularly interested in candidates who demonstrate a commitment to exceptional undergraduate teaching that fosters welcoming and diverse learning environments. Initial teaching responsibilities will include courses in materials engineering, manufacturing processes, and mechanics of materials, with opportunities to teach senior-level courses in the candidate's area of interest as well as our senior design sequence. Applicants should detail in their cover letter the technical elective(s) they would be prepared to offer or senior project(s) they would be able to advise.
Department Information:
The Mechanical Engineering Department comprises 8 tenure/tenure-track faculty and 4 lecturers, offering a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering (ABET accredited) and supporting approximately 250 undergraduate students. Faculty members are encouraged to mentor undergraduate students in research, with internal funding available for student-faculty research during the academic year and summer sessions. Gonzaga's Center for Teaching and Advising provides regular faculty development opportunities, including a New Faculty Learning Community program to support new faculty.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Teach 18 credit hours of courses annually, including Materials Engineering, Manufacturing Processes, and Mechanics of Materials. Opportunities to teach first-year and senior-level seminar courses are also available.
- Establish a research program in the candidate's area of expertise, encouraging undergraduate student participation and mentoring.
- Provide academic and career advising to undergraduate students.
- Engage in service and academic citizenship within the Department and University.
Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field (ABD candidates considered with completion by a specified date).
- Evidence of undergraduate teaching and mentorship.
- Demonstrated scholarly/research agenda.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with engaging, inclusive teaching practices in materials, manufacturing, or mechanics courses.
- Proven ability to establish and lead a research program.
- Postdoctoral and/or industrial experience.
