Job Summary

Under the direction of a registered nurse, the Mental Health Worker (MHW) plays a crucial role in ensuring patient safety and well-being. The MHW assists professional and technical personnel in the observation of patients, some of whom may require continuous, intermittent, or video observation.

The primary goal of observation is to prevent harm to the patient, staff, and to reassure patient safety and prevent any harm that may result in a negative medical outcome.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provides observation for patient safety (40%): The MHW will be responsible for continuously observing patients to ensure their safety and well-being.
  • Performs selected nursing procedures (40%): The MHW will assist the registered nurse with routine patient care, such as feeding, hygiene needs, and organizing activities and interactive therapy sessions.
  • Maintain a clean, safe hospital environment (5%): The MHW will contribute to maintaining a clean and safe hospital environment.
  • Documentation and Communication (5%): The MHW will be responsible for accurate and timely documentation of patient information and communication with healthcare team members.
  • Cost Containment (5%): The MHW will contribute to cost containment efforts by ensuring efficient use of resources.
  • Personal Growth and Development (5%): The MHW will have opportunities for professional growth and development through training and education.
Requirements
  • One (1) year experience in an inpatient hospital setting.
  • One (1) year experience in an outpatient or inpatient psychiatric setting.
  • CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) training within 3 months of hire and annual completion.
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification or UC Davis Health CPR within 3 months of hire.
  • De-escalation/behavioral health training, MAB Certification, or relevant training or experience.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Ability to use a computer, keyboard, and/or mouse to utilize healthcare systems for documentation, communication, training/education, and completion of schedule/timecard.
  • Ability to utilize medical terminology appropriately.
  • Commitment to excellence in patient care.
  • Effective interpersonal skills to effectively deal with patients, visitors, patients, and staff.
  • Demonstrates accountability and professionalism.
  • Adapts to change in a positive, professional, and productive manner.
