About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Pathology Technician to join our team at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health. As a Pathology Technician, you will play a critical role in supporting our Anatomic Pathology department, ensuring the accurate and efficient processing of surgical and autopsy specimens.

Key Responsibilities
  • Correctly identify and label specimens, maintaining accurate records throughout processing.
  • Provide technical support for gross bench preparation, including preparation of materials and supplies.
  • Assist with frozen section preparation as requested by bench personnel.
  • Dispose of surgical specimens in accordance with established departmental policies.
  • Prepare and autoclave instruments and materials for specimen processing activities in Surgical Pathology and Microbiology.
  • Correctly identify specimens and maintain identification throughout processing.
  • Prepare specimens for microscopic evaluation according to established protocols.
  • Follow up on abnormal cytology results according to established protocols.
  • Maintain tissue processors, stainers, and coverslippers, preparing stock solutions and Vitek sterile saline as needed.
  • Assist Microbiology Staff Technologists in managing incoming media.
  • Ensure proper identification of autopsy subjects and completion of necessary paperwork before postmortem examination.
  • Prepare patients for prosection, performing gross dissections with minimal supervision.
  • Apportion tissue specimens to medical investigators for diagnostic and teaching purposes, ensuring accurate and appropriate labeling.
  • Clean and sterilize instruments, and clean the autopsy suite after each use.
  • Leave the area prepared for the next case, setting up instrument trays and organizing organs for gross conference.
  • Dispose of autopsy specimens according to established departmental policies.
  • Remove hazardous bulk waste materials from the laboratory each working day, pouring into appropriate bulk drums in the hazardous waste shed.
  • Maintain inventory of flammable materials and formalin, distributing materials to areas within Anatomic Pathology as needed.
  • Maintain recycling activities for solvents, ensuring proper labeling and storage, and maintaining logs and recycling equipment.
  • Report any problems to the Senior Pathology Technician immediately.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.
Requirements
  • High school graduate with 2 years of applicable laboratory experience required.
  • Associate's degree in science or licensed school of mortuary science preferred.
