Job Summary

Under general supervision, the Electrical Mechanic Foreman supervises the performance of skilled tasks in the installation and maintenance of electrical circuits, apparatus, machinery, and equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plans, schedules, directs, and inspects the work of subordinates according to approved instructions, standards, plans, and specifications of the job.
  • Makes estimates of material and labor required to complete work assignments, requisitions material, supplies, tools, and equipment required for the work, and maintains accurate records of time spent on jobs.
  • Ensures shop equipment is up-to-date with current technology and in good working condition, either by recommending purchase of new equipment or facilitating repair and certification of existing equipment.
  • Oversees a safe, efficient repair shop utilizing good housekeeping procedures.
  • Responsible for the custody and care of all tools and equipment used in performing electrical mechanic work.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Environment

Typical duties involve exposure to industrial equipment or operations, including working near operating mechanical equipment and loud noise. Duties may also involve working in close proximity to or in conjunction with construction activities. Work may be performed in a variety of weather conditions and may involve working in confined spaces or at heights. Duties could include contact with hazardous or toxic materials and exposure to noxious odors.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of the electrical trade.
  • Considerable knowledge of the national electrical code and other relevant codes and regulations.
  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.
  • Skill in the use and care of the equipment and tools of the trade.
  • Skill in the operation of computers necessary to plan, schedule, and coordinate work at several work locations, and perform record keeping and communication reports in a manner conducive to the best possible use of District resources.
  • Ability to plan, lay out, install, and repair wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus, and control equipment.
  • Ability to make electrical repairs to motor vehicles.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate well orally and in writing in the dissemination of information and instructions.
Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent and four years of journeyman-level experience in the electrical trade or two years as a sub-foreman in that trade.

Additional experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Civil service status in one of the foregoing classes.
