Job Summary

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Electrical Foreman to join our team. As an Electrical Foreman, you will be responsible for supervising and leading a team of Electrical Mechanics in the installation and maintenance of electrical circuits, apparatus, machinery, and equipment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise and lead a team of Electrical Mechanics in the installation and maintenance of electrical circuits, apparatus, machinery, and equipment.
  • Plan, schedule, direct, and inspect the work of subordinates according to approved instructions, standards, plans, and specifications.
  • Makes estimates of material and labor required to complete work assignments, requisitions material, supplies, tools, and equipment required for the work, and maintains accurate records of time spent on jobs.
  • Installs, troubleshoots, repairs, adjusts, and maintains electrical equipment and controls in water reclamation plants, pumping stations, and sewage collection control structures.
  • Maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs motor vehicle electrical systems and components.
  • Performs necessary rigging in handling equipment and operates cranes, hoists, sludge diggers, and bridges to expedite installation and repair work.
  • Lays out raceways by bending, cutting, threading heavy wall conduit, flexible conduit, and EMT and cable trays. Installs conduit fittings and pull boxes. Pulls wire/cable and makes terminations to complete electrical installations in a workmanlike manner.
  • Installs and removes hold cards to de-energize, isolate, and clear electrical systems operating at 600 volts or less as necessary to protect equipment and personnel.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent and two years of journeyman-level experience in the electrical trade or two years as a sub-foreman in that trade.
  • Additional experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
  • One year of service with the District as an Electrical Mechanic.
  • Civil service status as an Electrical Mechanic.

Working Conditions

Typical duties involve exposure to industrial equipment or operations, including working near operating mechanical equipment and loud noise. Duties may also involve working in close proximity to or in conjunction with construction activities. Work may be performed in a variety of weather conditions and may involve working in confined spaces or at heights. Duties could include contact with hazardous or toxic materials and exposure to noxious odors.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of the electrical trade.
  • Considerable knowledge of the national electrical code and other relevant codes and regulations.
  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.
  • Skill in the use and care of the equipment and tools of the trade.
  • Skill in the operation of computers necessary to plan, schedule, and coordinate work at several work locations, and perform record keeping, and communication reports in a manner conducive to the best possible use of District resources.
  • Ability to plan, lay out, install, and repair wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus, and control equipment.
  • Ability to make electrical repairs to motor vehicles.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate well orally and in writing in the dissemination of information and instructions.
