About the Position:
The Imaging and Microscopy Program at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is at the forefront of cutting-edge research, providing exceptional capabilities for the imaging of intricate and diverse materials through various imaging techniques across multiple scales.

The program operates several advanced beamlines, each designed to cater to a wide range of user needs while fostering collaborative research efforts.

Position Overview:
We are looking for a dedicated beamline scientist to enhance our Imaging and Microscopy Program. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in user support at the Hard X-ray Nanoprobe (HXN) beamline, pushing the boundaries of x-ray nano-imaging methodologies.

The HXN beamline is equipped with a beam size of approximately 10 nm, allowing for the detailed characterization of elemental, chemical, and structural variations in complex material systems in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional formats. This facility also supports sub-10 nm resolution through advanced ptychographic imaging techniques.

A diverse array of x-ray imaging methodologies, including fluorescence mapping, nano-XANES, nano-diffraction, tomography, and ptychography, are available for scientific inquiry.

The HXN beamline is recognized as a versatile tool for hard x-ray scanning microscopy, offering unmatched capabilities due to its unique combination of high spatial resolution, multi-modality, and comprehensive 3D characterization.

Key Responsibilities:
- Provide user support at the HXN beamline, identifying opportunities for impactful collaborative research.
- Collaborate with NSLS-II staff on beamline operations, including commissioning, maintenance, and enhancements.
- Develop and implement next-generation microscopy systems for ptychographic tomography and advance nano-imaging capabilities through innovative methods.
- Streamline workflows from data acquisition to analysis, improving productivity and reliability.
- Work on the development of in-situ/operando cells for 2D and 3D characterization in partnership with NSLS-II staff and external vendors.
- Pursue high-impact research opportunities utilizing the capabilities of the imaging and microscopy program.

Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of two years of post-Ph.D. research experience, or equivalent experience in a relevant field such as physics, materials science, or chemistry. A Ph.D. is preferred. Candidates should have:

  • At least two years of hands-on experience with x-ray imaging or microscopy.
  • Proven expertise in experimental data analysis.
  • A strong publication and presentation record in relevant scientific areas.
  • The ability to work effectively within a diverse team of scientists, engineers, and technical staff.

Preferred Skills:
Extensive research experience and knowledge in x-ray microscopy and imaging, as demonstrated through publications or software development, is highly desirable. Additional qualifications include:

  • Instrumentation experience relevant to scanning microscopy, ptychography, or tomography.
  • Expertise in microscopy/imaging data analysis or simulations.
  • Experience in user support at synchrotron facilities.
  • Proficiency in scientific programming, preferably in Python, related to microscopy/imaging.
