Upton, United States Brookhaven LAB Full time

Organization Overview:

The Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN) at Brookhaven is a prestigious national scientific user facility funded by the DOE, dedicated to providing users with exceptional research experiences alongside leading scientists and access to cutting-edge instrumentation.

The mission of CFN is to propel advancements in nanoscience through pioneering fundamental research and technique development, serving as a central hub for a wide-ranging collaboration network.

Each year, CFN staff members facilitate the research of nearly 600 external facility users.

Three strategic themes in nanoscience underpin the CFN scientific facilities: The CFN engages in research focused on the synthesis of nanomaterials through assembly, designing precise architectures with targeted functionalities by organizing nanoscale components.

The CFN explores and applies platforms for state-of-the-art techniques aimed at Accelerated Nanomaterial Discovery, integrating synthesis, advanced characterization, physical modeling, and computer science to iteratively investigate a diverse array of material parameters.

The CFN develops and employs advanced capabilities for studying Nanomaterials in Operando Conditions, characterizing materials and reactions at the atomic scale in real-world environments.

Position Description:

The CFN is on the lookout for a skilled Postdoctoral Research Associate to engage in groundbreaking research focused on the development of neuromorphic materials and devices, integrating them into application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) tailored for AI applications.

Your work will involve delving into the materials and device physics of cutting-edge neuromorphic materials and memristors, particularly those based on metal oxides and 2D materials, while developing nanofabrication processes for the integration of memristor arrays onto commercially fabricated ASIC chips.

This project also aims to explore the origins of memristor stochastic variabilities and their control through innovative methods (such as novel patterning and atomic defect control).

You will collaborate closely with Dr. Chang-Yong Nam from the Electronic Nanomaterials Group.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
You will fabricate individual memristor devices utilizing state-of-the-art neuromorphic materials and device architectures.

You will conduct electrical characterization of the fabricated devices, with a focus on their memristive switching characteristics and pulse-based, neuromorphic operational traits.

You will investigate new materials, device physics, and patterning techniques to enhance the performance of neuromorphic devices.

You will perform nanofabrication of memristor arrays and facilitate their integration onto commercially fabricated ASIC chips.

You will collaborate with a diverse team of scientific staff, including experts in materials science, nanofabrication, device fabrication and physics, ASIC design, electrical characterization, AI algorithms, and computer science.

You will share research findings through publications and presentations at external conferences.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
You hold a Ph.D. in a relevant field (Materials Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline), awarded within the last five years or expected to be completed prior to the start date.

You possess demonstrated experimental expertise in the fabrication and electrical characterization of memristor devices (including pulse measurements), along with a solid understanding of associated materials and device physics.

You have hands-on experience with nanofabrication processes (e.g., electron-beam lithography, physical vapor deposition, atomic layer deposition, etc.) and neuromorphic device data analysis.

You communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations/proceedings.

You are dedicated to innovative and independent research, teamwork, and fostering a safe scientific work environment.

You are committed to promoting an inclusive and respectful workplace culture.

Other Information:
This is a 2-year Postdoc Assignment.

BNL policy stipulates that after obtaining a PhD, eligible candidates for research associate positions may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a postdoc and/or in an R&D role, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness, or other life-altering events.

Additional Information:
This is an On-Site position.

Brookhaven Laboratory is dedicated to providing fair, equitable, and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $116,200 per year.

Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualifications, education, and experience, and will be considered alongside the internal peer group.
