Upton, United States Brookhaven LAB Full time

Organization Overview:

The Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN) at Brookhaven is a premier national scientific user facility funded by the Department of Energy (DOE). It provides an exceptional research environment, allowing users to collaborate with leading scientists and utilize cutting-edge instrumentation.

The mission of CFN is to propel nanoscience through pioneering fundamental research and the development of innovative techniques, serving as a hub for extensive collaborative networks.

Each year, CFN staff facilitate the research endeavors of nearly 600 external users.

CFN's scientific facilities are built upon three strategic themes in nanoscience: The CFN engages in the synthesis of nanomaterials by assembling precise architectures that achieve targeted functionalities through the organization of nanoscale components.

CFN also explores and implements advanced platforms for Accelerated Nanomaterial Discovery, merging synthesis, advanced characterization, physical modeling, and computational science to systematically investigate a diverse array of material parameters.

Additionally, CFN develops and employs advanced capabilities for studying nanomaterials under operando conditions, enabling the characterization of materials and reactions at the atomic level in real-world scenarios.

Position Description:

The CFN is in search of a skilled Postdoctoral Research Associate to engage in groundbreaking research focused on the development of neuromorphic materials and devices, integrating them into application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) tailored for artificial intelligence applications.

Your role will involve investigating the materials and device physics of cutting-edge neuromorphic materials and memristors, particularly those derived from metal oxides and two-dimensional materials, while also developing nanofabrication techniques for the integration of memristor arrays onto commercially produced ASIC chips.

This project will also delve into the origins of stochastic variabilities in memristors and explore innovative methods for their control, including novel patterning and atomic defect management.

You will collaborate closely with Dr. Chang-Yong Nam from the Electronic Nanomaterials Group.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Fabricate unit memristor devices utilizing state-of-the-art neuromorphic materials and device architectures.

- Conduct electrical characterization of the fabricated devices, focusing on their memristive switching properties and pulse-based neuromorphic operational characteristics.

- Investigate new materials, device physics, and patterning techniques to enhance the performance of neuromorphic devices.

- Execute nanofabrication of memristor arrays and facilitate their integration onto commercially produced ASIC chips.

- Collaborate with a diverse team of scientific professionals, including experts in materials science, nanofabrication, device fabrication, physics, ASIC design, electrical characterization, AI algorithms, and computer science.

- Disseminate research findings through publications and presentations at external conferences.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- A Ph.D. in a relevant field (Materials Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline) is required, conferred within the last five years or to be completed prior to the start date.

- Proven experimental expertise in the fabrication and electrical characterization of memristor devices, including pulse measurements, as well as a solid understanding of associated materials and device physics.

- Demonstrated experience in nanofabrication techniques (e.g., electron-beam lithography, physical vapor deposition, atomic layer deposition, etc.) and data analysis related to neuromorphic devices.

- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations/proceedings.

- A commitment to innovative and independent research, teamwork, and promoting a safe scientific work environment.
- A dedication to fostering an inclusive and respectful workplace culture.

Other Information:
This is a two-year Postdoctoral Assignment.

Brookhaven National Laboratory adheres to a policy that stipulates eligible candidates for research associate positions may not exceed a combined total of five years of relevant postdoctoral and/or R&D experience after obtaining a Ph.D., excluding time related to family planning, military service, illness, or other significant life events.

Additional Information:
This position requires on-site work.

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to offering fair, equitable, and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $116,200 per year.

Salary offers will be determined based on the qualifications, education, and experience of the final candidate, taking into account the internal peer group.
