Job Overview

SUMMARY

The Lead Educator is responsible for guiding children through age-appropriate activities that foster social, physical, and cognitive development essential for their growth. This role includes supporting fellow educators in achieving classroom objectives and addressing challenges, while collaborating with management for effective program delivery and oversight.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT:

  • Establish a nurturing and inclusive classroom atmosphere that welcomes children and their families.
  • Provide positive guidance and supervision to children.
  • Engage in respectful interactions with children and parents that reflect the organization's philosophy.
  • Assist children aged 6 weeks to 6 years with daily routines, including diapering, feeding, mealtime, bathroom activities, rest periods, and personal hygiene.
  • Oversee the implementation of the outdoor learning environment.
  • Communicate outdoor classroom supply needs to management.

HEALTH, SAFETY, AND NUTRITION:

  • Adhere to the Child/Adult Food Care Program (CACFP) requirements.
  • Complete meal counts at the point of service.
  • Maintain updated emergency information for children and ensure accurate identification.
  • Review child injury reports for accuracy and inform parents of any incidents in the classroom.

PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT:

  • Attend all staff meetings, required training sessions, and special events.
  • Uphold confidentiality regarding children, parents, and colleagues.
  • Exhibit a professional demeanor at all times.

LEADERSHIP AND FAMILY COMMUNICATION:

  • Facilitate and support parent-teacher conferences and other family engagement activities.
  • Welcome and assist families as they enter the facility.
  • Provide orientation for new and transitioning families and conduct tours of the center.
  • Offer information and resources to assist families.

LEADERSHIP AND STAFF COMMUNICATION:

  • Assist in onboarding new staff members.
  • Evaluate staff training needs and report findings to the Center Director.
  • Model effective interactions among teachers, children, and parents.
  • Provide training on environmental rating scales to staff.
  • Guide staff on emergent curriculum and intentional teaching practices.
  • Mentor and coach teachers and head teachers as required.
  • Follow up on classroom objectives post-evaluations.

PROGRAM EXCELLENCE:

  • Plan and implement enriching early childhood education experiences across various domains, including art, music, literature, science, mathematics, drama, and physical education.
  • Organize activities that support the emotional, social, intellectual, and physical development of each child.
  • Facilitate the organization of developmental assessments and child portfolios.
  • Lead efforts to comply with NAEYC, QSLA, and Title 5 standards.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT:

  • Adhere to guidelines set by the Department of Social Services and the California Department of Education.
  • Maintain an organized and clean classroom and outdoor space; ensure educational materials are well-kept.
  • Keep current portfolios and documentation for each child.
  • Prepare lesson plans, classroom calendars, and daily schedules with the teaching team.
  • Assess staffing ratios to extend hours when necessary.
  • Provide coverage for staff breaks.
  • Collaborate with teachers to meet deadlines and required documentation.
  • Ensure all classroom paperwork is up-to-date and accessible.

Additional duties may be assigned as needed.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee teaching staff, substitutes, student workers, interns, and volunteers.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in early childhood education, with at least 1 year of continuous experience at Long Beach Day Nursery preferred.
  • Site Supervisor Permit required.
  • AA in Early Childhood Education or higher preferred.
  • Compliance with Title 22 Teacher Eligibility Requirements, including health screenings, TB clearance, and immunizations.
  • Clearance from the Department of Justice and Child Abuse Index required.
