New York, New York, United States City of New York Full time

Job Overview

About the Organization

The Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) stands as the foremost municipal preservation authority in the United States. Its mission is to safeguard New York City's architecturally, historically, and culturally significant structures and locations by conferring landmark or historic district status and overseeing their regulation post-designation. The agency comprises a panel of 11 commissioners appointed by the Mayor, supported by a dedicated team of approximately 80 professionals, including preservationists, researchers, architects, historians, attorneys, archaeologists, and administrative staff. New York City boasts over 38,000 designated buildings and sites, predominantly situated within 158 historic districts across all five boroughs.

Team Dynamics

The Planning and Outreach Analyst plays a pivotal role within LPC's leadership team, acting as the primary intermediary between property owners of buildings under review for landmark designation and pertinent community organizations. This position also involves undertaking specialized projects associated with planning and designation initiatives, collaborating closely with the executive leadership team and the research and preservation departments.

Your Contribution

The Community Outreach Coordinator is instrumental in supporting the agency's efforts concerning the designation of individual landmarks and historic districts.

Key Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Community Outreach Coordinator encompass:

  • Engaging with building owners and community stakeholders regarding properties under consideration for landmark designation;
  • Conducting research on planning, real estate, and other pertinent issues related to buildings under review for landmark status, while monitoring the progress of potential designations;
  • Organizing and participating in meetings with property owners and community representatives;
  • Coordinating the evaluation of proposed work for properties on the calendar and managing job filings with owners of designated buildings;
  • Collaborating with other city agencies on matters related to landmark designation;
  • Serving as a liaison with the State Historic Preservation Office concerning proposed National Register nominations;
  • Overseeing the process and content for communications with property owners regarding the designation process;
  • Drafting outreach materials for property owners, including informational brochures, testimonies, and speeches;
  • Executing special projects related to planning, real estate, and designation initiatives as directed by the Executive Director.

Qualifications

1. A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and two years of experience in community engagement or related activities pertinent to the responsibilities outlined above; or

2. A high school diploma or equivalent and six years of experience in community engagement or related activities relevant to the responsibilities described above; or

3. A combination of education and/or experience equivalent to options 1 and 2 above, with all candidates required to have at least one year of experience as described in option 1.

Preferred Skills

Educational background in historic preservation, urban planning, real estate, or a related field is advantageous.

Demonstrated time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.

Familiarity with LPC regulations, urban planning, zoning, and other New York City policies.

Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with experience in creating and delivering presentations.

Strong organizational capabilities with the ability to prioritize tasks strategically.

Proficient computer skills, including expertise in Microsoft Office Suite. Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), data management and analysis, and Adobe Creative Cloud is a plus.

Professionalism and maturity are essential.
