Position/Program Information

The County of Los Angeles Fire Department is actively seeking skilled candidates to fill vacancies for the position of Fire Safety Engineering Associate II. This role is crucial in addressing the ongoing challenges related to public safety and fire prevention.

Job Overview:
Under general supervision, the incumbent will engage in professional fire protection engineering tasks, which include the evaluation and endorsement of intricate construction plans, as well as the inspection of construction sites to ensure adherence to fire safety codes and regulations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct thorough reviews of complex building plans, including various occupancy types and specialized projects, ensuring compliance with fire flow, hydrant placement, and access requirements.
  • Identify inconsistencies in construction plans with respect to building and fire codes, offering solutions and communicating necessary adjustments to project applicants.
  • Assess access needs and determine fire flow and hydrant specifications during the entitlement phase of projects.
  • Provide guidance and technical oversight to junior fire prevention engineering staff, including training on initial plan assessments.
  • Perform calculations to validate building area justifications and fire flow necessities; conduct field inspections to confirm hydrant locations and flow rates.
  • Evaluate requests for deviations from established fire codes and ordinances, providing analytical insights and recommendations to fire prevention management.
  • Act as a liaison between the Fire Department and various public agencies, attending meetings to relay information regarding fire protection standards and ongoing projects.
  • Utilize heavy equipment as necessary during inspections, navigating challenging terrains.

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:
Training and Experience:
Option I: A Certificate of Registration as a Fire Protection Engineer;
Option II: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a focus in civil engineering, fire protection engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, architecture, fire protection administration, or a related field - AND - One year of experience in fire protection engineering;
Option III: Five years of experience in fire protection engineering;
Option IV: Two years of experience at the level of Fire Prevention Engineering Assistant I.

License: A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize alternative transportation methods for job-related functions.

Physical Requirements: Moderate physical activity, including standing or walking for extended periods, with occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds.
