We are currently seeking an experienced Garage Underwriting Lead to oversee our underwriting team. This role is pivotal in managing a portfolio of business generated by our agency partners within designated territories, focusing on both profitability and production while supervising the technical and operational facets of portfolio management.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Guide, oversee, and mentor a team of underwriters, clearly communicating performance expectations.
  • Encourage a collaborative team environment that promotes independent decision-making and problem-solving, aligned with delegated underwriting authority and business objectives.
  • Build and maintain strong, profitable relationships with agency partners.
  • Manage agency relationships within the assigned territory, including identifying potential agents and participating in their onboarding process.
  • Conduct product line evaluations and champion key segments within the designated area.
  • Engage in travel to agent locations and attend off-site events as necessary.
  • Participate in the recruitment and selection processes to ensure the organization has the requisite talent to meet its business objectives.
  • Conduct performance reviews and facilitate developmental opportunities for direct reports.
  • Establish and oversee departmental processes, including setting performance benchmarks for staff.
  • Ensure adherence to underwriting guidelines, rates, and forms to maintain profitability and achieve business goals.
  • Act as a liaison with internal and external auditors.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of 5-8 years of experience in Excess & Surplus multi-line underwriting.
  • A comprehensive understanding of the Excess & Surplus marketplace.
  • At least three years of supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including the ability to mentor key team members.
  • Proven leadership capabilities with a strong influence in managing challenging situations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Advanced presentation and sales abilities.
  • Strong working relationships with the wholesale brokerage community.
  • Willingness to travel as required.
  • Proficient in computer applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
