We are currently seeking an experienced Garage Underwriting Lead to oversee our underwriting team. This role is pivotal in managing a portfolio of business generated by our agency partners within designated territories, focusing on both profitability and production while supervising the technical and operational facets of portfolio management.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Guide, oversee, and mentor a team of underwriters, clearly communicating performance expectations.
- Encourage a collaborative team environment that promotes independent decision-making and problem-solving, aligned with delegated underwriting authority and business objectives.
- Build and maintain strong, profitable relationships with agency partners.
- Manage agency relationships within the assigned territory, including identifying potential agents and participating in their onboarding process.
- Conduct product line evaluations and champion key segments within the designated area.
- Engage in travel to agent locations and attend off-site events as necessary.
- Participate in the recruitment and selection processes to ensure the organization has the requisite talent to meet its business objectives.
- Conduct performance reviews and facilitate developmental opportunities for direct reports.
- Establish and oversee departmental processes, including setting performance benchmarks for staff.
- Ensure adherence to underwriting guidelines, rates, and forms to maintain profitability and achieve business goals.
- Act as a liaison with internal and external auditors.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- A minimum of 5-8 years of experience in Excess & Surplus multi-line underwriting.
- A comprehensive understanding of the Excess & Surplus marketplace.
- At least three years of supervisory experience is preferred.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills, including the ability to mentor key team members.
- Proven leadership capabilities with a strong influence in managing challenging situations.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Advanced presentation and sales abilities.
- Strong working relationships with the wholesale brokerage community.
- Willingness to travel as required.
- Proficient in computer applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
